Since we have somewhat of a band room in our basement we have planned out some things acoustically for the room. The room has insulated 4" thick sheetrock walls. It is carpeted and has tiling for the ceiling. The ceilings are 7' tall (only about 3-4" inches of headroom above that...) and have two layers of insulation inbetween floor joists. The room is 14' 8" W x 12' D.

We are going to make "acoustic panels" out of eggcrate/bedding foam and plywood. We will attach the foam to cut sheets of plywood with some kind of adhesive or just staple speaker fabric over top of it and allow the foam to stand without adhesive. We will place these on some kind of stands so they are off the floor and not touching the walls.

Would this help acoustically? (The walls will not be covered with the panels.)

Bedding foam? Not in the least my friend. Acousticly, that shit is invisable.

I would recomend some searches on this site on eggcrate foam, or foam in general.

You will find some interesting discussion, but overall a tendency to avoid it.

Then search on owens corning 703, or 703

Lots of info here

703 ridgid fiberglass is the hardest thing in the world to find. You will find love. You will find the meaning of life. You will find peace before you find ridgid 703 fiberglass. Local insulation stores dont have it. Home depot will not order it. the only place to get it is realtraps.com Good luck

Insulation suppliers in my area readily carry both O.C. 703 and the Knauff equivalent.

But you definately need to check with insulation suppliers first, Confusitron.

You don't want foam. Go to the SAE site and read the sections on acoustics.

Huh? I found 703 with a few phone calls and a 10 minute drive. It only cost me $200 and you can't buy true love for less than $300 in most states.

I'm having trouble getting the stuff too. I called OC and asked for dealers in the Chicago area. They gave me a number for a local OC rep and that connected me to some dudes cel phone who said he'd keeps getting these calls. I called back and they gave me the number for another rep and he directed me to a local dealer. They don't carry the stuff, but said they might be able to get it on their next truck. They were supposed to call back with a quote and stuff, but I'm still waiting. I have a feeling you need to order serious quantities to be taken seriously.

Anybody know of a dealer who has this in the Chicago area????

Look in the yellow pages under Insulation Suppliers.
Start calling around. They'll know what you mean.

Here in PA, it also goes by the name "duct board" because they use it for making HVAC ducts. Just another avenue to explore if you're having trouble finding it.

HangDawg, you beat me to it.

Air Conditioning installers use this stuff to surround ceiling ducts.
