Effects return on VS-2400

I've noticed that most of the portable DAWs have aux outs or effects sends but I've yet to find one with an effects return. What's the point? I want to be able to use outboard effects on my recorded tracks by sending the audio out of the DAW, into an EQ/Compressor/Modulation/whatever and then BACK into the DAW. Can this be done and if so, how?
