I am looking to create a sort of chimey quality to distorted electric guitar solos, much like a distortion harmonic. Is there any effects or EQ techniques that could help me do this, or is this primarily related to guitar\amp?

I am mic'ing a tube amp with an SM57.

BOSS (made by Roland) offers a few stomp box effects that might be what you're looking for. The CE-5 Chorus Ensemble or CH-1 Super Chorus adds a nice accent to any guitar sound, regardless of distortion. (You can check those out here http://www.bossus.com/gear/productlist.php?ParentId=91)

They also have a pitch shifting pedal (PS-5), which is a really awsome pedal for 'thickening' tone and does really well in creating a harmony from your guitar by slightly shifting pitch up or down (settings are all changeable of course).
