Editing Software?

I have see many people refer to secondary programs they use to edit.. Like Sound Forge, Cool Edit, etc.

I have Cakewalk Home Studio XL, do I need those other programs? My editing needs are basic and I've been able to edit what I need in Cakewalk just fine, but is there something better that I may be missing out on? What would it do for me that my editing in Cakewalk can't? .

thanks

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :)

I've used n-track, cubasis, cubase VST, cubase sx, and now Pro Tools LE and I have never needed to go to an external editor. My editing needs are pretty basic, too- pretty much just slicing and sizing regions and its just easier to do it withing the program that is already open.

I think the external editors were used more when computers didn't have the power to do real time effects and they were all applied offline with wave editors. They are also used more by folks doing loop-based music. If you are using your DAW like a virutal tape machine, though, you probably won't often need to leave the editing features in the DAW.

One exception is in mastering. Before I got Pro Tools, I preferred to do my mastering in Wavelab. It is setup so that you can easily open all of your mixs and audition them side by side to see where the sonic differences are. Then you can use all the VST and DX plugs that you have to tweak them to all sound "right" together. You can still so that in most DAWS, it just seemed easier in the editor.

Take care,
Chris

Yoo Hoo

On Mipos we do the dance of joy for news like this.

I guess I'm basically using this DAW like a 4-track, except with really awsome sound quality. So I'm learning that if it sounds good it is good.
Thanks be to you all

that philosophy goes for every aspect of this too. No question there is always a better piece of gear or easier way to get the job done. but hey, if you are happy and it sounds good so be it. If you love a particular no name $100 guitar and think it is the cats ass... stick with it.
