easy fix to phase?

someone told me you could easily find out if 2 mics are out of phase just using a pair of headphones that have a stereo/mono switch... (i've got a couple moreme phones)

is this true? it sounds too good to be true. is this true? i hope it's true...

sure - switch to mono -- if the sound suddenly drops-out, produces a flangy sound, or just generally sounds "strange" (you'll know when you hear it), it likely due to comb-filtering effects caused by phase issues between the 2 channels.

awesome! i'm gonna mess with that, and it will soon be a process i do before tracking. Do the two tracks have to be panned apart from each other?

What do you mean? When you switch to mono to check, it won't matter how they're panned!

No, panning them away would actually not show the phasing issues. And if there are phasing issues panning them away would make the stereo image either wider or fuzzy. You want to pan them to the same spot, or switch to mono to hear the phasing which sounds like comb filtering/flanging effect. To solve the phasing issues when you're using mics the first obvious thing to try would be adjusting mic positions while both channels are panned to the same spot say center, or better yet switch to mono.
