"WARNING: THIS APPARATUS MUST BE EARTHED"

This was on the back of a mixer (Allen & Heath) that I zoomed in online that I'm thinking about buying. I know this must be an amateur question, so I'm posting it here. Can anybody explain to me what it means?

Thanks,
Joe

Ok...another dumb question. How do you know if an outlet is grounded? Yes, I know I may sound clueless...

if you're plugging a 3 pronged plug into a 3 pronged outlet...you're grounded. The bottom, round plug of the chord is the ground and usually it runs all througout your house all the way outside to a metal pole deep in the ground...I think some may be connected to the pipes too (I'm not an electrician though)

So, supposing I run through a power conditioner everything I plug into that is then grounded because the power conditioner plug has 3 prongs?

yep.........

Unless you plug the power conditioner into an ungrounded outlet by way of an adapter (ground lift).

Just a nitpick... it might be a good idea to check to make sure that the ground in the outlet itself is connected. It's unlikely that it's not, but it's possible.

Earthed and grounded mean the same thing, sometimes things get mixed up in translation, especially Chineese>english. One of the funniest ones is "boinging" thats what most of us call bouncing tracks btw.

Which you should never do. (Another nitpick)

Not quite. Ground lifting is often necessary to eliminate ground loops.

Not the AC ground. That's a no-no. There is always a signal-related solution. AC ground lifting is dangerous, and in any case will void the warranty of most gear.

i agree. electricity is just not something I'd want to play with. The ground pin is there for a reason and I don't want my gear to get screwed up (or me...but i care about the gear first ;) )

Hmm...

I'm a little more confused then when I first asked the questions, but a little more confident that it will be ok if I plug this mixer into my power conditioner and into the wall. Thanks people...

just remember...if a ground is tied to a ground which is tied to the earth....you're gounded

In other words you take a 3 pronged plug (which has a ground/earth connection on it) and you plug it into a 3 pronged socket that ALSO contains an earth ground...then those two are now tied together. So the chain just continues on and on. Starts with the microphone and ends with the earth itself....everything is grounded
