Ear conditioning

something i was thinking about today: i have been mixing on standard speakers for quite a while now, and have basically learned how a mix should sound on these speakers in order for it to sound well on anything. Am I going to be in trouble when I finally start using real monitors to mix on because my ears will automatically want to hear how a mix should of sounded on my speakers now?

i have a pretty good "ear" for recording and perfect pitch but this sort thing is something i always wondered about. any feedback? thanks.
 
References will be helpful to you, methinks. Such as a cd.
There may be some mistakes made and errors that need to be corrected, but consider these to be merely growing pains. The more you work with a better monitor the better your mixes will be. It will take time sure, but such an upgrade can only prove to be beneficial.
 
You got used to the old ones, you'll get used to the new ones.

If you're comfortable with the old monitors, and "know" them, why would you get new ones???
 
I was comfortable with my $80, 3-pc yamaha desktop speakers - still use 'em in fact, but I knew they was not the ideal monitoring rig for digital recording. I have since upgraded to 20/20's and it's like I never heard anything before.
 
Well....... U won't be in any trouble when U go and use "real" monitors, the thing is U just won't be used to them, so just take a couple of your fav CD's sit down, hit play and listen.... and eventually U will get used to how things should sound on those monitors.

And even if U are used to an old set of desktop speakers, it is worth gettin monitors because the desktop speakers will never be as acurate and clean sounding as monitors will be.

Hear, hear,

The more attuned you get to a good monitor set, the more you find how noise riddled your mixes really are.
