E String Rattle

Hi...I have a 1976 Les Paul Custom. In recent years I've not put a lot of playing time on it so the frets are still playable but......I'm wondering about the bridge. When I pick the high E string open...and on most fingered positions as well....there's a "rattle". If I put my finger on the high E string between the bridge and the tailpiece the rattle goes away. The same is not true if I put my finger on the high E string between the nut and the tuner. I've played with the tailpiece height and the bridge adjustments just to see what makes a difference.....but I'm getting nowhere. It's not fret buzz....I'm sure. That's easy to detect and correct. So.....I'm thinking it's the almost 50 year old bridge. Your thoughts?

Have you Changed Strings? Is it still there? - String Rattle from the Bridge is often caused by an errant saddle - maybe a burr in the groove.
