Well I had narrowed down my choice to an E-MU 0404, because I have only heard good things, but then I was scrolling through Kijiji, and someone is selling a (used) FA-101 for the same price..

Now this is what concerns me, I heard the E-MU 0404 cannot say, for example, play an mp3, while you are listening to what you are inputing, if that makes sense. Can someone shed some light on this? Something about only using Asio drivers, not Asio and (wav, I guess?) at the same time. Not really sure what that means to me. But I'd like to load up an MP3 as a track, and then add another track to, hopefully I can do that?

The FA-101, is of course, used, and probably a lot older. Also comes with no software, where I assume the E-MU comes with a decent software bundle (Not to mention support).. I'd also need to buy a firewire card. But I mean, edirol is a better brand than creative, IMO.

What I basically want to do, is make some albums on my computer (using midi as drums for now, to get some demos made).. Not sure why i'd need more than 2 outputs, but maybe it comes in handy, I'm not really sure.

Opinions are wanted! Thanks guys!

Can anyone else confirm/deny that the preamps are kind of weak on the fa-101 (I will be using mics 90% of the time)..

This is not a function of the soundcard, but what program you use. Most DAW's will be able to import mp3's and you can record another track along with it. The EMU probably ships with a free copy of Cubase and it definitely can import mp3's. I do it all the time when collaborating.

I don't know much about the FA-101.

have fun.

Well I might go grab it right now.. I just read something (Can't remember exactly) about only using to use ASIO and not Wav or something like that, and the guy was complaining you couldn't play back an mp3 (or whatever uses wav driver) and record (or hear) yourself at the same time, but I'm not sure!

The E-mu 0404

A sound card with logical intuitive capabilities. Will provide you with pristine sound quality. Its a studio quality,24-bit/192khz,multi-channel recording and playback with built in hardware based effects. And most important of all,S/pdif digital interface with midi in /out.
You can sync it with any pro sound card in the market today and professionally expand your capabilities in the future.I use mines as the bridge between two other interfacers and her main purpose is to run my virtual orchestra for recording and syncing on to video.

An ASIO driver is the software that allows the soundcard to interact with your DAW programs. It's not an audio format like mp3 or wav and has nothing to do with those. If the guy you mentioned couldn't play an mp3 through his 0404, he doesn't have a clue!! Even Bill Gates can play an mp3 through an 0404!!!

There's a bit of a learning curve with EMU products and Cubase (which comes free with the 0404), especially their mixer app, but once you're over it, the stuff works good.

have fun.
