Dynamic on ac guitar....

This really isn't all that surprising... the NT-5 isn't that good a sounding microhphone, I can understand a dynamic, even an A-T dynamic, kicking it's ass.

The positioning is indeed an important factor, but at the end of the day the important thing is that you were able to achieve a tone you were happy recording.

Another placement idea you might want to try is to aim the condenser at the bridge from about a foot in front of the bridge about a foot or two under the guitar [toward the floor]... sometimes when you add this in with a mic about a foot off the 12th fret that is aimed back at the center of the soundhole it will net a very full yet very open tone [be careful to check the two in mono for phase anomolies].

BTW... ribbon mics can also sound extraordinary.

tell me to shutup right now

I shouldn't probably say anything.....
but i have to say the there IS NO FORMULA or RIGHT WAY TO DO ANYTHING (just like good sex, aside from the xpected orgasms, YES plural, go for it; your recordings will definitely improve). There are so many variables to account for, at any time in any environment (pres, position, player, humidity, temperature, power supply, song, available headroom, monitoring) If it sounds good...great. If it sounds better than something esle, even better. If you still think there could be an improvement....A/B it to something else....yadda yadda

maybe it's a matter of preference, but i think most professionally done sparse recordings make it a point to hear these little live noises.

It's definitely a matter of preference.

as for condensers not having enough midrange, well, i'd just recommend a large condenser, which colour the guitar/vox nicely, as opposed to a small condenser, which has less colour or "midrange".

You kinda' lost me with that one. But that's alright ... whatever floats, I guess. :D

If you're referring to the Beyer M201... it's great.
Thanks Don. What, if anything, would you compare it to or put it in the same group with?

You're welcome Kenny... and I put the Beyer M201 in the great dynamic mic group... or "must have" mic group. ;)

I like an omni dynamic on acoustic. I don't like cardioids on acoustic because of the proximity effect.

Hmm. I haven't tried my new turbo boosted pre into pre set up with either of my omni dynamics yet.

That was kind of my point, I've found that I can cram an omni right up against the soundboard and get a natural if somewhat chunky tone, such that less gain is required.
