This really isn't all that surprising... the NT-5 isn't that good a sounding microhphone, I can understand a dynamic, even an A-T dynamic, kicking it's ass.
The positioning is indeed an important factor, but at the end of the day the important thing is that you were able to achieve a tone you were happy recording.
Another placement idea you might want to try is to aim the condenser at the bridge from about a foot in front of the bridge about a foot or two under the guitar [toward the floor]... sometimes when you add this in with a mic about a foot off the 12th fret that is aimed back at the center of the soundhole it will net a very full yet very open tone [be careful to check the two in mono for phase anomolies].
BTW... ribbon mics can also sound extraordinary.
