Fantastic word picture... thanks again. Hey would you mind if I repost this (my requset and your help) in the "Soundfield Mic Discussion" thread... reason being, to place all the Soundfield mic info in one easy to find again thread? It will make searching eaiser later for us and new HR members.
I think Bob Cain can do a better job of explaining it simply. It's kinda tricky - like a pair of figure 8 mics in a Blumlien configuration. With a matrix controller, you can extract a lot of information created by the interaction of all the capsules. But if my explanation will help get things started, sure.

Harvey, the "Soundfield Mic Discussion" thread I was referring to is http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=127470 and once again thanks.
Yeah, I've been following it, sorta. All the math involved to understand how it works hurts my brain.

Basically, it's "point a whole bunch of capsules everywhere" and let the decoder figure it out. Lotsa sums, vectors, sines, cosines, and algorithms. Danger, danger, Will Robinson - brain overload.

Bottom line: it works kinda like I said. A "little ball of mics" that you can combine in different ways to extract a lot of information about where the hell the sound is coming from. Like M/S - on steroids!!!

Don and all, you can actually see how the RCA77 works here: http://www.coutant.org/3.html

Yep! RCA77 uses ingenious system of acoustical labyrinth, where the shutter also determines different amount of acoustical coupling of the labyrinth with ribbon. In closed position of the shutter it is an omni, and the labyrinth forms infinite chamber behind the ribbon, so since the ribbon is tuned into lowest frequencies, the response is flat.
Dynamic omni is a different matter. As Harvey has said, in order to make it flat (no dips, no peaks) acoustical resistance (some absorbing material) should be used.

>ADDED: here's another thought... what would be the results of having a mic with an adjustable acoustic or electronic delay chamber?<

Besides of RCA77, Schoeps (hm, forgot the model--tomorrow will check) does it mechanically in SDC--variable omni-cardioid-fig8.
