Dusting one off

Revisiting an old song from about 5 years ago...

Something still isn't sitting right and now my ears and head are tired...

Looking to see what you all hear...

My take on this:
I have to really listen close to tell what the bass guitar is playing. It's not that the song doesn't have bass but there doesn't seem to be any presence to it. I think I would try running the bass completely dry if it isn't already and try some wide Q eq experimenting in the 200 to 1k range. The vocal seems "out of the mix" i.e just a little too loud, to me.

Other than those two opinions, seems like a good mix to me.

OK now you have to go listen to my OLD wierdness I posted. Not really looking for a mix critique more like.......would anybody ever listen to this? Feel free to comment on the mix though cause there may be a glaring error. Always ready to learn.

Man, those are some pretty sweet vocals. I might drop a little bit of the echo in the bridge and chorus, though.

I'd take a little interest away from the bass in that mid-section interlude and add something in the upper register as well.

Sounds real nice. Good job.
 
High pass the bass at 100hz, and give it a little boost around 1000hz. Then bring up the volume a hair, it should have some better definition.

The vocals are sitting a bit too loud, but they sound great. I like them wet like that, but that's a personal taste thing. Maybe take the reverb down just a bit.

Nice song, Dave. My only real nit is that I can hear the tape hiss when it's quiet.
 
Sounds good Rabbit, there was quite a bit of hiss at times but overall-nice work. Vocal work is very good on this-the only time bass seemed weak was with a set of cheap headphones I wore for the first listen-my Yamahas gave the bass a solid bottom end.
The dynamic build up in the middle was a good addition, but I was waiting on a killer guitar solo to wail away at any time......I reckon being a guitar player makes you think that way though!:o

I've been rasslin with the bass... Sometimes it was too boomy and other times too thin to me... I'll try out some of your suggestions in the next day or two.

The vocals is another area where I'll have to go with your recommendations... I tend to try and bury my voice in the mix or really wetten it up with effects (I have the Lennon syndrome) ;) This time I tried to push them out front more thinking my subconcious was hollering 'OK,OK, you are loud enough... People are going to hear you!!!' :o I'll try pulling em back...

I think the 'tape hiss' happened when I went to dump things down to my 'puter just using my digital out from my 2480 into the digital in on my Tascam 428 but still leaving my VFire and ADA8000 'hot' with all my drum mics live... I think it created some sort of noise loop...

Oh, and Tony, the only reason there isn't any screaming guitar anywhere in because I suck on guitar... ;) If you have any ideas I'd love to hear what you could add to this! :)
 
Bass is hard for me too. Not so much the tone but how much is too much? One thing I do when mixing voc's is to listen at a VERY low volume. The vocals should just stand out a little. Also if you can afford to spend a couple of $, then the Avantone cubes are super flat in the midrange and can be very helpful determining what's stepping on what. One other question I ask myself is: "Can I understand the lyrics"? That's a pretty good measure of vocal mix, although there are many other factors of course.

Whoa, nice huge kick drum sound. That thing sounds like 50 incher. :D

The bass sounds processed. Do you have it going through some reverb or chorus or something? That's probably helping mask it in the mix. The big kick drum is hiding it a little too.

Other than that, it sounds cool. Fix that tape hiss sound. ;)
