I recently stole a 488 from ebay for 150 bucks. Unbelievable. This thing is in perfect working order although I am having some problems with volume level cueing individual tracks whilst recording new tracks. Anywho, I took a finished product from my 424 and thought I would go from the track tape outs (the 4 jacks with sync on 4) and dump em on 4 tracks on the 488 which worked ElPerfecto. Thus I will have 4 more tracks on the 488 to add more creative adventures. Cant believe the quality of the sound. I wonder if its theoretically not 2nd generation as I am making a master from master.

To make a long story longer, I popped the tape out of the 488 and put it in the 424 assuming it would encompass all 4 tracks on the 424, but lo and behold, it only uses track one and 2 as though it were a stereo 2 track mixdown. No big deal, but why wouldnt it transfer to all 4 tracks on the 424? Tape speed is perfect as far as moving tape deck to deck. Am I doing something wrong or is thats the way it goes?

interesting. The 488 is really cool although I wish it had direct outs on all 8 tracks. Its really a trip being able to play with both decks and the possibilities even for my somewhat newbie mind are endless.

any thoughts on my quandry?

Is it a 488 std or mkII?

The track width of the 488 is half the width of the 424mkIII, with the odd tracks being staggered slightly from the even tracks, and with a strong possibility that some of the 488 tracks would line up in the track-gaps of the 424mkIII head.

The 488's track staggering of the head is the technically most difficult thing to overcome, when popping a 488 tape into another non-488 deck. This would put the odd tracks at a very slight but noticeable time delay from the even tracks. That's not a good effect for most songs.;)

Btw,...

there's a concise writeup on milking 8 individual "track outs" from the 488.
I'll search for it.

It boils down to this: use each of these for an individual track output:

1) Line out L
2) Line out R
3) Monitor out L (use assign switches)
4) Monitor out R (ditto)
5) Effects send 1
6) Effects send 2
7) Cue out (it's mono, remember...set track 7 only)
8) Sync out (hard-wired to track 8)
