Hey Tjarko, I think one day you should write an impossible guitar solo and ask me to play it.

OK, will do! Be very afraid! LOL :D

Btw, when you get the original wavs...do you think you'll need to re-equalise the parts? Just wondering....I mean, the encoding does rip off some of the ultralow and ultrahigh frequencies of course... :)

TripleM: a pop? Must be my basstrack, Tom's tracks are usually clean...thanks!

Wha'chu talkin 'bout Willis? No pops anywhere.

SLuiCe - I wonder what it would sound like if you broadened that Q on the 986 EQ boost you gave it? If you did, you'd probably want to reduce the gain. I don't know if it would improve it or not. As you said the attack is nice in some places, so this suggestion may F up those spots. And the solution may be in the compressor. But it's just a thought. And that's quite a few bands ya got there on that EQ-gizmo. Which one do you use?

Hey Ped, Good question. I think it's mostly the stuff about 8K that gets lost in MP3 compression. The wave probably won't change much up there, but maybe in the lows. Can't wait to find out. I'm leaving for the weekend in a few minutes. I'll email you when i get back. Have fun!

Hey Trip- Waves Q10. I'll try that in a few days. You've got me curious. Cheers! Oh yea, Ped was being funny, pre-empting comments. I think he didn't see that you had actually already been here. :)

I'll have fun with Fold, Hate Pill, Run For Your Life and Chrysalis...plus the Kgirl72 collab, the A1A2 collab, the Erland collab and a new song of my own (actually, a couple of....argh!). Busy times...I hope no server will die on me the next week. But first: vacation for me too.

Trip: ya, I was joking around...I thought 'Trip might listen to it at home and detect a pop' LOL :D (sorry, I can't be helped)

At 00:54 now, bass is perfect ... perfect. Just enough attack, decay, just enough.

Vocal is very well mixed, I can understand all the words fairly easily on the first listen.

The acoustic guitar at 1:42 could be a touch brighter, maybe a bit punchier in it's mids, the upper-mids. And a touch of delay there, less reverb on that guitar, I want to say it's 'dusty'.

Take that snare-stick down in the verse ... IMHO, and just a hair. Maybe more verb on it.

At 2:41, the actual vocal itself is mixed well, and the bass is a very , very pleasant addition there. Instruments generally might be too loud.

The bass riff at 3:08, can come up ... in our face :D , no I'm not prejudiced to Tjarko ... am I ? :D

This next verse vocal is very, very well mixed.

What happens over your vocal held at the end of that verse is sublime.

At 4:11 this next chorus, bring the guitars down a smidgeon and bring the bass up a smidgeon.

At 4:38, that's a good level for the bass in the chorus.

And I'm on cans now. 7506's ...

I think this last chorus, you could start the vocal down a bit, so there's more 'jam' here, and draw a volume envelope on the vocal that comes up to really make the hook at the end 'Dry' ... LOUD.

I would fade it down after the last punch just after 'Dry' much, much sooner, like almost instantly.

vocals too loud????

Paul, I'm probably going for the Mark IV.

Yeah, I know, that's what I thought too and that's what I said. I almost always post in clinic threads without reading the other comments first - I don't want my impressions influenced by other people's idea. Anyway, I listened to it and thought 'that's it, that's the keeper'. But after I posted, I read the other comments, which included Sluice and others talking about ways to tweak the compression settings to enhance attacks on some of the instruments. I know what they're talking about, and I accept it, but I'm amazed they're operating at that level - it's way beyond where I'm at right now.

But that's the bitch on material where you're still learning how to do things - it takes forever to get the song done.

Oh well, nice that you're still thinking of me ;) :D
Love your sound as always. Hats off. Reminds me again that my bass urgently needs a service job (hasn't had one in 6 years)...

Toch goed gegokt, dat je mijn basgeluid wel mooi vond :)

Thanks guys!

This sounds very sweet as I expected. The bass sounds great from here. It really fills things up nicely. I think your vocals sound fantastic on this version. The emotion is perfect. Nice work. The acoustic playing is very good. It evokes.

I listened to the lyrics closer on this time. Very nice. I am actually seeing some themes here. I will keep listening with this detail in the future as you run through finalizing your album tunes.

One quick note. I don't know if it is the mp3 or what but I heard a pop at 2:00 and a crackle at 2:02 (just something to check but probably on my end).

studioviols- I went through the MP3 along with your timecodes/comments. I agree with most of them (other than maybe the volume swell idea in the last chorus. I'm particularly interested in trying the shorter fade at the end that you mentioned. As for the instruments in the chorus, I think the hi-hat needs to come down, and also the guitars will probably be retracked with a new amp that doesn't quite crowd the upper mids so heavily. Thanks for the dissection.

sloop- :) Thanks.

dafduc: Thanks man. You know, I get pretty anal about some stuff I do in terms of mix. I'm trying to learn to let some things go and break some habits I picked up when I first found the clinic. One of which was to assume that every suggested adjustment was absolutely essential to the survival of the song and my integrity as a musician. Surely a trait I developed from years of trying to impress my father or some shit like that. But posts like yours and the ones by Dobro in this thread remind me that my time might be better spent enjoying more music, making more music, and not fussing over the music I've made. Thank you.

Dobro-

Excellent observation. Most of the songs that are going on the cd are ones I've recorded over the last two years learning how to record. My only hope is that I haven't killed the feeling in them analyzing the sonics to death. Too many hats too wear, eh?
Also, I think if I had more of a sense of musical direction, in terms of what I want to do in a live project, I would probably spend less time with this stuff. I'm working on that. I'm hoping that by the end of this year I'll be done with the CD, having that goal behind me, and I'll be with a group of people I can really explore with. Frankly, I'd like someone else to deal with all this recording shit. It's such a time consuming thing. I love recording and mixing, but I don't think it's really the best use of my music time. Oooops...I'm getting way the fuck off topic here. Sorry. LOL. Anyway, thanks a lot Paul. You've given me another kick in the ass...

skids- Hey man, good to see you! Those pops/crackles are actually pick sweeps on the acoustic. Though I will be the first to admit I get a lot of pops and crackles with my Studio Projects mic, usually when I ride it too hard. I still like it though, even if it is a bit sibilant. Themes...yeah this one has my "world without compassion" theme I suppose. I wrote the lyrics to this one back in '93. 19 years old and living by myself in Florida (far from Maine!), sitting in near darkness because Florida Power shut off my lights! LOL...bastards!. Some lessons learned there for sure. Thanks brotha. Cheers.

Guys, I think I've got all the important mix stuff covered now. We can let this thread go. If you want to make a suggestion you can PM either Pedullist or me. Other than that, let's give the spot to someone else. Thanks again!
