Hi guys. As some of you know Pedullist (Tjarko) will be doing (actually has done) most of the bass parts for my CD. He has taken the scores for all my keyboard bass parts, read them, and played them back on his basses for me to mix in.

I'll be retracking most of my electric guitars on the songs for the CD, but unfortunately I'm still raising the money for my new guitar amp so I haven't been able to keep up with Tjarko's work. I give him a file and 2 hours later he has the whole damn track done, always at least close to being a complete keeper.

Anyway, this is one tune that doesn't have a lot of heavy electric guitars in it, so I've been working on the mix a little until I get a new amp.

What I'm most concerned with here is the bass mix, but of course any other recommendations are welcome too. Thank you!

Dry

And thanks again, Tjarko, for your continuing help and aggressive work ethic. You may be Dutch and all, but you're still a pretty cool guy in my book. :) Salut.

'tis likely one the best bass sounds I`ve heard in a while. However the kick and something else, maybe a guitar resonating, are sharing some freq`s around 120 to 300 and its a little muddy down there. I think some roll-off at 75 to 80 would help the bass on the real low notes that want to resonate as well, Just IMHO. This is a very nice arrangement and with beautiful performance.

I'm downloading now on Dial up !!:(

This should only take a few hours!!

God, I miss my DSL connection:mad:

8.24 megs would only take 46 seconds if the server is healthy on DSL.

I going to go paint a room or something.....................

Latter! :)

Hey Tom,
Very nice indeed. That bass tone is very very nice. ...punchy and full. Nice job Ped. Is that a low bass pad filling up the sustain in the background in a few parts? ...or slow compression release? ..very very nice.
.......I got no bitches. Nice stuff man.

......I can handle up to about 9 megs. ....anything over that and this homey's gonna have to shine a brotha on.:D

Whoa that bass sounds smoooth. It makes the song very wide and deep. I mean the whole room was filled with it that's a very good job Ped. The arrangement and progression of the of the song is very relaxing, sets a mood and never breaks.

Sweet tune and accolades to you both, you make a good team.

Ah yess... "Dry"... back to the ears... like an old friend...

Really nice bottom  That goes for both of you ;)

Seriously the kick and bass share nicely... Toki987 may have to take the bass/snare/kick grammy away (from Sam?) and give it to you guys...

Whoa..you added a little lead line around 1:40 ... right before "is time a factor for you?"

Whoa... in the chorus, you've dropped the keys back (organ patch), and brought out more electric guitar... nice...

Smooth bass...

Glad to hear the piano around 3:48 is still there, up front...

YOU CHANGED those vox at 4:30!! 'DRYYYYYYYY'!!! There's a pause now, and multiple vox trax.

Gosh, you fooler... had me thinking all you'd done was put Peds bassline in there... you actually overhauled this in a major way...

I'll try to get a better/more critical listen on this within the next few days (hopefully by friday) as the schedule is really tight.

Tom's classic gets Ped's chops... good work, fellers

C

(Oh... can hear you breathing in the outro... left speaker  )

Much improvement to the original in my opinion. I've been listening to your work quite a bit lately. A little catch up since I haven't been around long and have missed out on all the fun.:) The bass sounds terrific and the vocals are much improved also. Much more emotion and range in your vocal performance. Your pushing pure clarity through those vocal chords on this. Bravo!!!

No pads. The acoustic guitar line pedals the open E. Also, I'm not sure what Ped's tracking compression setting were, but I also added a tiny bit myself. I think I went 1.60:1 @ -10dB. Attack: 30 Release:100. For the most part the original track worked very well for the song. I also did a little EQ...little dip around 83Hz and a roll off @40. Also 2-3dB boost at 500Hz and at 6K. Thanks a lot Mike. I'll be posting more tunes as I retrack guitars (after I get the amp), and I'm hoping for your bass mix critiques. I started learning with your tracks.

smeagol- your confusion confuses me.

Toki- I'll have a few more listens tonight. There are 3 guitars rolling through the verses in this. It could very well be the clean electric too. Thank you very much Kenny.

Ghost- Yea sorry man. The song is 6 minutes and I don't post less than 192. It's pointless to IMO. I'm still trying to figure out if posting MP3's for mix critiques isn't pointless. But I suppose 192 should be good enough to get the idea of a mix. Thanks for trying another one! Cheers.

Khompy- Thanks man. Got your latest email. Glad you're getting better.

participant- haha..hi Chad. Yea, I redid a lot of the vocals on this. I think I was trying to force it out on my last go. This time I waited until I was feeling the song again before I set my mic up. I'm learning not to sing unless I can sink into the music. That breathing is likely on the acoustic track. Oh well...at least you know it ain't midi eh? LOL. Thanks Chad! I hope school is going well. Oh, so you're Mike's bitch. I knew he must have one around here somewhere... :)

zikes- I've been seeing you a lot lately. I very much appreciate all your feedback man. You're always encouraging and observative. Thank you.

Always try to help friends, but I'm forced to listen on small headphones. So it's difficult to comment on the bass.

I can say that the part supports the song very well. It seems the song has enough fullness and richness in the low end. The only possible suggestion I might make is for you to decide if the bass has enough defined attack for your tastes. It seems to be a tough call in my opinion on whether you might want to boost that a nudge or not.

Just thoughts...

Oooh, it works for me

Nice. Great playing and vocals. I like it a lot.

You cant beat real bass...

Nice and smooth and thick.. Sounds good to me....

Excellent job Ped....

Nice. It seems like the tempo has been reduced a little from the version I have, but could be my imagination.
I think the vocals came in too loud, they were blaring over the acoustics on my system, especially when you open up some... I would bring them down a little or compress the balls out of that louder stuff.
Otherwise, very nice so far (only about 1 minute in, thats taken me 10 minutes to get so far)

Decide what amp you are getting yet?

Very nice bass sound! Ped has really leant a great track to this.

I did notice some guitar fret noise just before the electric kicked in (maybe about the 2:50 mark or so) ... I'm listening on cheap computer speakers and this was a bit distracting...not sure how it sounds on a better system.

Overall, the mix sounds real nice, and I dig the song. The bass really adds the deep sound that this one needs.

Nice job guys! :D

this song sounds great, awesome tracking\mixing job IMHO...im most impressed with the guitar sound you got...what kinda mic setup did you use to get that sound
impressed

Does anyone else hear a phone ringing @exactly 2:39 and 4:11?

sounds great.. nice job Ped! that's a good bass sound alright, and the performance is excellent... nice additions/ updates Tom.. these speakers are deceiving me, so I'm just gonna enjoy the listen and leave it at that.. If your going to be redoing all your stuff with new guitar sounds, there's no point in being ultra crucial now.. always liked this song and Ped hooked it up! *****
