Hi guys!

i actually finished tracking this about 5 or 6 days ago, but i have been very busy. i recorded the song once early last year, but i'm re-recording songs that i like with newer experience.

So any comments are welcome, but i'm particularly interested in how the low end works out on other systems, especially at high volumes (if anyone would care to crank it for me ;) ). Let me know if it booms or gets too muddy.

It's a style i'll call "big blues" for now, and some of you might remember it.

"DRY"

Thanks a LOT!

Great song man. Sounds a little like a Metallica song. I love the guitar and drums. How did you record them? Did you say that you wrote this one? Anyway, it's sounds real good man.

Thanks man, but you really must have got the wrong song..."Dry" doesn't even sound like Metallica's little brother....

Oh, well. It was "Dry" But i loved it anyway :D I had to listen in Lo-Fi because my computer sucks. but it sounded real good.

I just looked at NWR's stats, and it says you listened to "Blanket."

Do you remember a lyric?

I'm just very very puzzled by the Metallica comparison..

In fact as of right now nobody has listened to it...

You know, i listened to "Dry" again and your right. It dosn't sound like Metallica. But you vocie sounds like James'. Cool

The words to the song that i listened to go something like:

HusH.......something,something, Don't Let the ugly penitrate your soul or mind. i can't really remember all of it. ANd the intro starts out with a acoustic guitar. I could have sworn that i player "Dry"......

Ok ya that's the one...or close enough anyway...you must have downloaded it.

Still don't get the James thing I guess.

:D

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

;)

Hey Tom,
.....Yeah, I remember this one..... I would love to compare, but I lost a bunch of tunes when i reformatted my 'puter:( Wasnt the earlier version of this more of a heavy guit based tune? Very cool song Tom. The guitars sound great on this..... warm acoustics, .....and Fuck, thats a great lead guit. tone. Thie piano sound and its part in this totally works. As far as mud goes, the bass itself is crystal. Some of the heavier rhythm guits get a touch clouded up during the big parts..... but its nothing that i would find offensive. Great recording as usual..

..OK, now ive got some questions........

-SWEET lead guitar tone.....Whats the chain on that?
-The acoustics sound extra special. Is that the same octava stereo set-up you usually use?
-Are you using the rnp for vocals?

g w/5

cranking up the volume right now.

In the first 1 min, I would like to hear the crash and kick a little louder, especially compare to that tom hit. Just a personal preference.

Man, very nice stereo image. Since the I am listening at a pretty loud volume right now, I have to say the bass git can't be heard very consistently, I'm afraid it won't be heard well when played back at a low volume.

Other than that, this is one nice awsome sounding recording/mix!!

Paul Reed Smith>Marshall JCM900>SM57>Studio Projects VTB-1>Delta>CakewalkFX Chorus

Ya, but i blended in some clean miked Paul Reed Smith as well.

-Are you using the rnp for vocals?

No, Studio Projects VTB-1.

Thanks a lot Mike...I'll get your tracks to ya, i promise.

A1A2- Thanks a lot man...I'll look at those bass levels. I appreciate it!

I listened on the big system upstairs, loud. The bass is clear and clean, goes back for miles and each note sounds like a giant thick oily splash and goes out in all directions. The somewhat looser head on the kick sets it off just right.

Man, nice work on the guitar! I always love your guitar playing.

Sounds like you're expanding your vocal style also.

The drums sound as good as I've heard in the clinic. Especially the toms.

what is that at 3:46 in the high register? a piano? nice vocal ooooooo thingy right after that.

Man there is a lot of nice subtle stuff in your music.

So the mix sounds pretty damn perfect to me. I can't really find anything. Sounds great as is.

If there was one tiny little thing, maybe it's the sibilance on some of your F's S's and hard C's. Barely noticeable but it's there in the beginning of the song. So if you're looking for that one last thing I think that's it. The C1 is giving your voice some nice presence in a rich mix, just maybe a hair too much air on some of those consonants.

Keep in mind that that's after a couple listens trying to find something to complain about.

Nice work.

.......oh, Im definitely gonna steal that!!

Awesome song man, as is all your stuff... been listening to your songs for a few months just never commented cuz I figured i couldn't tell you anything you dont already know, as I know virtually nothing about recording/mixing..
But I know good music and yours kicks ass... you write some very intelligent lyrics too....:)

Been wanting to ask you something about one of your songs that you had posted a few months back, I only got to hear it once before it disappeared...
I remember it had something to do with 911 and had a part in it that sounded kinda east indian... I'd love to hear that one again.... mayby download it?

:)

Well, the mix sounds fine and you probably already realize that so I'll throw in my comments about the song itself.

Nothing sounded like Metallica at all by the way.

This was my 2nd (or perhaps 3rd??) experience listening to a SLuiCe tune. The first thing that (again) strikes my attention is you've got some serious talent. Again, as with your "Blanket" tune I'm not getting any immediate hook from it. Nothing is making me feel a groove or pulling me in so to speak. Obviously you're not going for the pop rock crowd, but even bands like Rush, Dream Theatre, Pink Floyd (all which seem to influence you) have a hook in their tunes, something that pulls you in and compels you to get into it. Perhaps the overall dynamics are a tad low for too long. You have the chops to really BLOW the listener away from the start, why not get in their face right away and then lower the dynamics a bit, and then build again later in the tune. I'm rambling, but there is some serious potential with you as a musician/song writer. There's a fine line between "impressing yourself and impressing the listener". When you can do both at the same time, that's when careers are built.

But then again, what the hell do I know, it's 3:35 in the morning. L8r... :)

Toki- ya i'm gonna steal that too! haha. i'd better start paying better attention to your lyrics... you have a way with words. :)

erichenryus- Glad you dug it. I'm always trying new vocal things, because there always seems like there is room for experimentation. Fortuntately some of it actually seems to work. You're right about the consonents...i need to be checking that on my monitors while tracking, not just headphones. Thanks as always Eric.

kelly5150-

"The Passing"
Actually i pulled that one down because i re-recorded it and sent it to another member about 2 or 3 months ago for collaboration, but i think they dropped the ball. It may be the next song i post (one way or another) so stay tuned. :) (i'm trying to get an album done this year so i've done a few re-recordings, etc.).

Alright, it's 5 am. I just got up to lock up a noisy cat...so good night fellas. Sorry if there's a lot of typos.

Just missed ya homeuser-

ya know, this song itself (and Blanket) i wrote when i was twenty (9 years ago). As for careers, well, it will probably not happen and nor do i intend to force it with "hooks" that i don't hear naturally. i'm not a Rush or Dream Theatre fan either. i like Tool, Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Mozart, and Pink Floyd, and Home Recording.com. But i always appreciate feedback from the "Pop" perspective too as it keeps me at least a little bit "anchored." i look forward to hearing some of your hooks!

Yeah I've noticed you're making great strides in your recordings and remixing, your sound is getting better and more refined....
Are you gonna remix "Winded"?..(xlnt song btw).

Put me down for one of your CD's:)
