Drums on Fall out Boys song.

You guys are just following phil. That makes you corperate sellouts.

Just kidding, Phil is totally right. Lets get back to the original point of this thread. The drums sound heavily compressed, and the snare drum is gated I think. Or it has a very short release. Sharp attack however. The seperation is amazing, I think the snare and kick might be triggered. those cymbols are quite quite compared to the rest of the drums.

here is the deal...

this is what I meant by what I said earlier... Cleary none of you got it... which suprises me... but anyway, I meant that I have heard this bands songs and to me they sound in a way dishonest. Meaning that the song writer doesn't really "get it." He is just in it because he feels he has something to say, but I feel the lyrics and the music suck. That is my opion. I agree with anyone who says they want to listen to it because they like it. That is totaly cool! I swear to it, but it is so easy to tell a fake pussy band from a band who actually has real heart. That is what I meant. And the corporate thing follows with that. Technically Nirvana became really corporate, however they still maintained what they wanted to do and the sense that they wouldn't change for anybody. This band "fall out boy" is a complete repitition of the bullshit that has been in our main stream for the past couple of years. Just a regurgitation of rock n' roll and "punk" music. That is what I meant. This band sucks!

again nothing about the drums in that post what so ever.

you are a dick

you are a dick... hence i was responding to another question, not the one about the drums... why do you all insist on being such dicks about technical bullshit!!

I'm going to have to disagree with the statement that if a band is good, they will become popular, if they "suck" they will not become popular. There are plenty of amazing artists writing inovative and creative music who are gaining little recognition from it. And there is plenty of over-done, uninteresting hog wash that is over-hyped and popular from marketing schemes. I think most people prefer the later. Why? Because most people aren't musicians and prefer music that is simple, familiar and easy to understand. What is considered "good" and what is "bad" (what sucks or doesn't suck) is completely relative to the listener. However, music that is interesting, creative and played skillfully is often more discernable from music that isn't, at least to the more trained ear. Sorry to turn this thread into a complete philosophical debate. I just had to do it. Furthermore, I've never heard the band or the song in question.

You have some very good points here! I really am referring to the position of a band that becomes popular and instantly get labeled (and are labeled just because they are popular). There are bands that are assembled just for album sales, and that is just record executives who are filled with greed. That's an aweful thing. Still, if someone likes the music its not their fault.

And right! ...Back to the drums!!

My sister likes the song, so she dled it... I just listened to it, and I found the cymbals hard to hear over everything else (of course, it was a bad quality dl, but still). The bass and snare drum don't sound all that natural.

Song's called "Sugar We're Goin' Down."

Jesus people, lighten up. I've been listening to Fall Out Boy a lot lately. Pertinent lyrics for my life what with bullshit between my gf and I and my ex-gf and I. It's just a plain fun band that is really poppy and musical. I like how they play really dark music and sing lines like "so let me wrap a locket around your throat I'll weigh you down and watch you choke you look so good in blue." Lots of their stuff I kinda wish I wrote, not just because it's catchy but you can't help but indentify with the anger and frustration of dealing with women and sex and bullshit.

BTW, I haven't watched MTV in about 10 years and don't listen to the radio. And Fall Out Boy kinda sucks live, but both their CD's are really fun.

Oh, and if you go to their website, it shows them in the studio. It looks like he's got about $40,000 worth of vintage Neumann's around him, not to mention everything double-mic'ed. Your best bet is to get some coated heads on big maple drums, a steel shell snare, and tune the hell out of 'em. Use a really nice pair of large diaphragm condensors overhead and a snare and kick mic to try and get as close as possibe. Add in close mics slowly to get the attack, but it sounds like it's got more to do with the tuning and room than anything. Also, looks like he's using about 13/16/22 inch maple Pearls, a 6.5x14 Pearl steel shell snare, and a few big Zildjian's, probably A's or A Custom's.

hmm... well i understand where your coming from here, and that is cool. I just don't agree that the lyrics are any good... And no offense this is strictly my opinion, which really I guess means nothing... haha, but anyway all i'm saying about the lyrics are that they are way to revealing and are to straight to the point... Its just way to easy to get the whole song in one listen and I feel that anyone can write lyrics like that guy does, it just seems so cliche to me and uncreative. I guess I just listen to way to much deep music or something, but whatever, again this is just my opinion. I'm not shooting you down, trust me.

I see that he has his kick covered with a blanket, I wonder what the science is behind that. And props to whoever recorded them I think the drums sound great.

What about the beatles " I want to hold your hand"? or Van Halen's " I can't wait to feel your love tonight"? Some music should just be fun.

who it a dick

oh anyways why the hell is anything like this even being discussed in this thread

even though I do hate that band, what the hell does it matter

GOD I NEED ANOTHER VALIUM!!!!!!

There is a bazillion people in this world, diffrent strokes for diffrent folks. I think if you like a band then cool, join thier fan club and have at it. On the other hand if you don't like a band, then just don't listen, but don't go around telling other people that what they like sucks. That is what we were supposed to get out of our system in high school.

Anyway, I am going to download it now so I can hear these drums.

So, really, what IS the science behind the blanket over the bass drum? I think I'm going to experiment with that... Has anyone done this before, or know why it's done?

People like certain music and someother people will hate that same music, it's all about personal taste and personal preference...My main point is the creator of this thread didnt ask if people liked that song he asked about the drum sound so if you didnt like the song in question what was the point of wasting your time and the guys time who asked the question by posting something about howmuch you hate the song....

The wholething about rather they been through the things they sing about or rather there fake,I have no idea like I said earlier I listen to a song because I like the tone and the beat and the way it's arranged I dont really give a crap if hes actually been through the things hes singing about, I dont even listen to the freakin lyrics just drums mainly...Im just happy not all people have that specific taste (not that theres anything wrong with that ) Because almost any song I was to write I dont think I have actually been through I havent had a hard life or something life changing happen to me, if I were to be honest in my song like someone said earlier I would have to write about eating at restaraunts and playing games and stupid mindless crap like that..

I messed with this once, but I took a coffee table, put it at the end of the kick drum, covered it in a blanket, and miced the kick somewhere (I can't remember exactly where I placed the mic :0...) and we got an ok sound that was a bit diffrent than we were used to in that room, but overall not something I recomend. It is fun to move furniture though.

It cuts down on bleeding. Cymbals and snare pic up really good through the bass drum mic, and having a blanket isolates it

 Whoever asked about what they thought of the song, this is totally blown outta porportion!!! Just answer the question if youve heard the song but if you havnt why say anything at all!!

God Lord People

WOW i can't believe i read all your posts...The drums are C & C drums...all lot of emo/indie bands use them....they are sweet ass drums but expsencive...and i don't know how they get that echo...but in that case i will agree that (allthough i do like a shit load of emo music) That band should not even be produced...btu thats where the good sound comes from. very well produced
