Drumkit sound: Tryng to emulate Neuraxis sound

Well, for one thing you should try using a bass drum instead of a bottle cap.

Sounds like you're trying to get the sounds by means of just "knob tweeking".

How on earth are you micing the kit? Can you give a run down of the setup?

Bottle cap? Ha! That's a weird analogy.

Oh well :( I'm not miking anything. I'm using Fxpansion BFD2 to make my drums. As you said, the kick sounds like i'ts popping (literally) I assure the kick sounds pretty natural when no EQ and comp is applied to it so... what should you recommend to emulate the kick in the Neuraxis album? What about the rest of the kit?

Thaaaanks!!!

PS: Just in case, in BFD2 I can control the balance of the inside kick mic / outside kick mic. I'm using a Pearl kick with almost nothing Inside mic in and a lot of Outside kick. Heavily compressed and EQed with big boost around 5khz (close Q) I'll post pics of the setting if needed.

Well, then you're probably just overkilling the EQ. A little goes a long way. Try starting completely neutral and add a little at a time. Mostly you just want to emphasize the attack. If you listen to the Neuraxis track, a lot of the low end is there, but just covered up by the other instruments and vocals.

In fact the kick had a lot more EQ... I was glad with the results until yesterday. The kick drum sounded like... some crazy guy hammering an anvil.

You're right, the kick has its own thud... do you reckon it has some MIDI layered over it?

No, I think it's a natural kit with impact pads and wood beaters. I've heard dozens of recorded kits that sound like this.

You're EQing the kick in 3 places????

I'd say that's the textbook definition of overkill.

I'm not real good with MIDI stuff and programmed drums. I'm really good at recording a real kit and rarely reach for EQ. If I do, may 1 or 2 db boost or cut. Then again I like a really natural sound.

Someone like Farview or Tim Brown could probably give you more help than I could on this, but in my opinion its just too much EQ.

I understand your point but... kick in metal is not a natural sound. I don't think you can get that clacky sound by just placing the mic and using wood beaters. In fact, most metal bands use triggers along natural kicks.

I'm not a drummer. And I only have BFD to produce (or try to produce) that sound. You mention something about the attack. How's possible to emphatize the attack without EQ or compression?

No, I know what you're talking about because I played thrash for 2 years and went for that sound. Back then it was just a hard fiber impact pad and wood beaters. These days they do augment it with triggers, but I'm not too sure with what. I think you should keep most of it somewhat flat and boost the 4-5k range, but do it mostly on output. If you EQ in 3 places you are really messing with the signal to a point of deteriorating it to nearly unusable. Try being subtle in the other two places and drastic on the output. Compression is OK to go heavy.

I've thrown down all the drum levels again. Starting from zero. I agree with the Eq thing. I put some records on my stereo and my kick drum is sounding unatural.
So, I'm gonna use a lil bit of EQ on the Kick in/Kick out and then put the right amount on the Aux.
