Hello, I think this is the right place to post this.
I am currently working on my solo project, making Progressive Metal and Death Metal and a combination of the two...
I am looking for some advice as to drum VSTs.
I have owned the original BFD by FXPansion for around 2 years. I didn't feel this was right for me so I bought Toontracks EZdrummer and Drumkit From Hell expansion for it, and was much happier with the results.
However, I still am not sure if it can take me all the way. I'm looking for real pro drum sound, suitable for blastbeats, fast double bass, fast rolls, you name it. I have good experience in programming the MIDI (velocity realism, etc.) but am still not entirely convinced by it.
I have looked very hard for examples of pro quality metal using this EZdrummer Drumkit from Hell software, but as of yet havn't really found any. There's a bunch of videos floating around YouTube but most of it seems pretty unmixed and out of the box.
However, I have heard that Meshuggah's album Catch 33 was programmed with Drumkit from Hell. I listen to this album and would be fairly happy with the sound. I wouldn't complain about it, but I feel it's a bit too machine like. After all, Meshuggah's whole sound is very machine like.
I can't seem to find a solid source that says this album was made with EZDRUMMER DFH and not Superior or something...
Which brings me to my main point.
I am hearing that Superior is so much better, and I stumbled across this the other day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps-iFfTekho
This is pretty much exactly what I'm looking for and is the best I've heard so far. However this video and in the comments states the sound is Drumkit from Hell Superior, but the image in the video is Superior Drummer 2.
I am in much confusion about Toontracks range of products, as I have heard a bunch of things saying this is the same sample library, etc. I have looked and can't find a source which explains these products in a way I understand.
As far as I know, an original old program named Drumkit from Hell was JUST a sample library. The same samples were then put into the Ezdrummer interface in the expansion pack that I own...Is this right?
I am confused as there is also a Drumkit from Hell 2 ( I think ), a Drumkit from Hell Superior, and Superior Drummer 2 (I assume there is a Superior Drummer 1 also..).
Anyway, I am wanting to know about these sample libraries, and basically which one would be best for me.
I am not incredibly concerned about the program including loads of mixing and editing functions as I understand Superior Drummer 2 does...as I think I would prefer to work with the "raw" sound in my own sequencer with my own plugins (Sonar 8 Producer Ed). However the features do sound quite good..
Basically what I want is; the sound in linked youtube video after I have finished mixing, a drumkit controlled by my MIDI Drum Maps in Sonar (I don't use a Drum Machine, I just draw in the MIDI), and bouncable to around 8 or more seperate tracks in Sonar (Kick,Snare Top,Hi toms..) for mixing.
What should I get? Drumkit from Hell Superior? Superior Drummer??
Appologies for my long post...I seem to get lost when I type and end up blabbering on. Hope you understand
Thank you for any advice you can give me!
