Drum Triggers!

hey, names joe, anyone wanna describe to me how drum triggers work?.. im familiar with putting them through a console, but im trying NOT to spend 300$ just to get a single kick trigger.

XLR, 1/4" and Midi Inputs are not a problem..

So if theres any other way to use a trigger without a console (example- plugging the 1/4" cable direct to the recording card. and then turning that into a tiggered sound) please let me know

You would need some type of virtual insturment / sampler too.
 
Try Ebay for a sound module. There is no way around having a trigger and a sound module. An old Alesis DM4 or DM5 will give you sounds and midi conversion. You should be able to get one for way less than $200 on ebay.
 
Heyas, resurrecting an older thread here!

I want to trigger my kick drum (and possibly others later) for recording purposes only. I don't want to go all out here, and am only looking to get a midi signal into Sonar. Reading this thread, if I go ahead and buy this: http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--ROLTMC6, I can just plug the kick drum trigger into this, and have this output a midi signal into the midi input on my computer right into Sonar, yes? I don't need a module or any kind of sampled drums because I can just attach virtual sounds to the midi notes directly in Sonar, correct? Also, as long as the triggers support it, I'll be able to have "dynamic" triggering available with this setup, meaning I can get different volumes for the midi notes according to how hard I actually hit the drum, right?

Just need some clarification before the purchase.

The simple answer to your quetion is yes.
However, This thing is way too expensive for what it is. Go on ebay and get a used alesis DM5. It should run about $100 (if that) and has more inputs and intenral sounds.(the internal sounds come in handy if you want to monitor the performance while you are playing it)

I you are just going to use the midi to trigger kick samples, you can always just record the trigger on to an audio track and get some replacement software like Drumagog or apptriga. That way you don't need to screw around with the whole midi thing.
 
Sorry Joe, could you elaborate on how the Drumagog thing works. I've heard some rave about it, and it seems promising. I play mostly faster stuff (e.g. yes, metal) but still incorporate a good amount of dynamics in my playing. So the direct output of the drum trigger would go into a recorder and record what kind of signal? Then the Drumagog would just run over this and replace the waveforms with sampled hits?

You record the audio. You just plug the output of the trigger into the mic preamp and record it to an audio track
