Maybe I can just turn it up?...probably not that simple....

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

I think I stupidly thought it would be easier than this. I did buy a pair of cheap SDCs as overheads, so I have 5 mics on there now...2 OHs (sort of a glynn johns setup), one on the snare and two on the kick - it would seem as though 2 mics doesn't equal more sound in this case. I'll keep at it!

Oh, and thanks for the good word on the playing, although I'm sure you'd agree it's easier to sound tight when you don't so much as touch the toms or any cymbal other than the HHs. I was too scared.

Haha sometimes simplicity works best. You can try boosting the kick more. I've heard some good results with just one mic outside of the res. head, but I find it hard to get a good sound. I guess you just have to keep trying without cuttings holes in the heads. What OH mics did you go with? I don't hear any phase issues which is common with first-time-drum-recorders, so good job on that. Oh yeah, did you make the switch to a DAW yet?

Sounds great to me heat. Nice little groove and smooth bass sound. That you on drums? Respect!

Yes, I'd prefer to just use one mic on that and ditch the cardboard tunnel. I'm not going to retrack this one as it was just a test, but I can still fiddle with the mix and see if it can be improved. Next time I may just try to dynamic in front of the reso head.

I wound up buying cheapo behri C2s for OHs. They were the only pair on hand locally and at around $60, it seemed like a quick way to get started. They are kinda shrill sounding, but it seemed like I would've had to have spend a lot more to upgrade considerably. As far as phasing, I thought I just needed to be sure they were both equi-distant from the center of the snare? That is what I did. They happen to each be 36" from the snare. One over the smallest tom and one off to my right about the floor tom.

Negative on the DAW thing. I like the Roland too much to switch anything there right now. I'll probably wait until that dies and then maybe think about changing formats? Thanks for your help man.

Cheers Bulls. Yes, this is my first try at playing recording and mixing real drums...glad it sounds ok. Thanks for checking it out!

Cool. I think you've pretty much got it down. Get great sounds at the source.

This is one infectious ditty sir. I hear the sound I think you're after on the drums - kind of Odelay/DJ Shadow/Jurassic5 I'm thinking?

I don't know a great deal about drums, but would rolling off some of the higher frequencies slightly remove a little of the brightness and give you more of that retro sound?

Hey, thanks rob. Yes, I'd say you're right on with the odelay/dj shadow thing.

Do the drums sound bright? I guess it's relative, and toning that down might get me closer...thanks.

Working on your song now. Deceptively simple, but challenging for me. There are just a ton of lyrics strung together with little time for breaths! I hope I come up with something decent...

Fun little thing to listen to. I know the drum pattern was simple, but it supported the song really well. I loved the snare and kick sounds.

I detected a little swishiness to the cymbals. But I couldn't tell if it was phase problems or that it was a 128K MP3. I suspect the latter.

Nice one.

I think it is relative Heat - they're by no means too bright or unpleasant to listen to. It was just a bit of processing that I thought could bring them closer to that vintage hip hop sound you're after.

Great, thanks 3M! Despite being so simple, it was kinda hard for me to play it consistently. I still amazingly messed up the timing a bit here and there, but overall it could be worse. I'll listen for the cymbals again - could be my set up and/or the cheap ass overheads, but hopefully just a conversion issue - thanks again.

Phew! Thanks for the advice...
