I am new to computer recording and I'm just starting to have fun with Guitar Tracks 2.0. My question is, what drum software programs are out there? I have read quite a few posts in here and don't seem to see drum software mentioned too often, or I simply am unfamiliar with the different drum software names. I am looking for something programable, but also something with preset drum patterns etc. And advice or general guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!!!

Fruity Loops is very good. I user it for creating drum loops for dance music, but it come with lots of drum sounds for all types of music.

You could pick it up for about $100.

if you go to www.fruityloops.com, there is a demo which has all of the features except save.

Hope this helps...

If you play dance music FruityLoops is the way to go. If you are into rock n roll, try Algorhythm from http://spacetimefoam.com

Coolest thing about Algorhythm, is that you can place each individual note (drum hit) in any particular place. Unlike loop generators where your drum notes have to be perfectly in time. Algorhythm lets you simulate things a real drummer does like flams, ghost notes, etc..

Thanks guys. I'll look into both of those. I am more interested in rock n roll recordings, not dance music. Any other suggestions?

Native Instruments Battery is supposed to be both loop and trigger oriented. I'm assuming that you want to use it like a drum machine and be able to program a complete song. I'd check that out. Also, there is a freeware program called Hammerhead. It's kinda basic, but it works pretty well.

Algorhythm sample..

Davo8411,

If you want to hear what Algorhythm is capable of for rock music, check out

All drums were programmed with Algorhythm. Some of the stuff in this song you simply can't do with FruityLoops, HammerHead, PC Drummer, or any other software.

Cheers..

After checking out that song & the site, I'd have to say that sounds like a decent package, especially for 30 bucks.

What about Macs?

I've used Fruityloops on a pc and I think it's great, very intuitive and easy to use. The Algorythm piece looks similar. Unfortunately, I've moved to a mac based system. The Battery demo was unfathomable. Any other recommendations?

..you could always buy a drum machine :)

Zoom makes 'em really well and fairly cheap.

I have an Alesis SR-16, but if I don't use it for a week, I basically have to re-read the manual. What I love about fruityloops is how easy it is to use and how quickly you can build up patterns and songs.

I tried Fruity Loops awhile back and was frustrated with it. I didn't like any of the sounds or loops. I've downloaded Algorythm but haven't played with it too much yet. I'm still giving it a try.

Anybody have much experience with outboard drum machines like Zoom or Alesis and been happy?

Here is a link to a program called Hammerhead. It is a software drum machine which is fun to play with. It allows multiple patterns and even writes a WAV file to disk. The real outstanding feature is in its ability to create Userbanks. (Check out the documentation.) Best of all, ITS FREE!

http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/download.shtml

After you learn to use the Userbanks, go over to this url and download some of the samples and build your own user banks. Also, you can sequence some of the larger files (under 65K). Again the price is RIGHT!

Have fun!:D

Personally, I'd rather work with an outboard drum machine (I usually do). I have a Zoom 234, and it's great. To me, it's much easier to have hand-on buttons to work with. I can program in real time, and with touch-sensitive buttons I can usually get my pattern down on the first try.

I've worked quite a bit with the Alesis SR-16, Boss Dr. Rhythm Section, and the Zoom 234, and (in my opinion) the Zoom 234 wins hands down. It's easier to program and the quality of the samples is (by far) the best.

And, although that sample from the Algorythm program sounded very good, I didn't hear anything I couldn't do with my 234.

Hey,

I use PC drummer Pro and love it. I collect sampled drum sounds free from the internet....many of the on the market outboard drum machine sounds are availabe. I can build any kit I want and export the drum tracks individually to my multitrack software so that I have control on each drum sound and processing.

As a song writer I've used a few drum machines. The best are the ones that are the easiest and that allow me to get back to writing my songs....not spending hours trying to write drum tracks. PC Drummer is great.

Good Luck

Thanks!!! I just checked out the PCDrummer site and I'll download it tonight and give it a try. It looks a little bit more like what I'm looking for. Hammerhead and Algorhytm sounds were so thin and tiny. Of course I'm still working with both of them to try to get better drum sounds out of them.

Do you have and PCDrummer Pro version or the other?

Thanks for all your input guys!

Killer sounds..

Davo8411:

If you send me your email address, I'll email you a full kit for Algorhythm I customized. It is definitely not thin sounding, and the same sounds I used for the MP3 I posted in my thread above.

I have an alesis d5 and the zoom 234 which also has bass samples too. these are hardware midi controlable samplers which are ok but not to my satisfaction. I have been researching for software samplers lately and I found discretedrums.com
to have the best quality samples I have ever heard. If you play rock and metal like me, check this out!!!!!!
I believe I will be getting it. $199.00 includes 12 CDS of AIFF and .wav formats. But keep in mind you need a software sampler to use these files. I use the EXS24 with Logic Audio.

I tried the Algorhythm demo, and it locked up my computer everytime I tried to use it.PCDRUMMER works great for me.
