Drum Mics

After months of reading reviews and looking into drum mics. I went ahead and got another AT2020 for OHs since I already had one. I also bought the SM57. I decided that I will buy MD421s for both toms. But I am still stuck on what mic to get for the kick. I found out that the D112 does sound a little thin and that a D6 is hyped and not suitable for all genres. As of now I am interested in the Sennheiser E602 for the kick, I have heard recording and read reviews about its paunchiness; which I like. Any opinions on the E602?

Buy those md421s, if you have the money.
Hopefully you'll agree that they're great on vocals, guitar amps, bass amps, and kick drums - Not just toms.

I didn't like the d112 on kick either. It definitely has a unique sound.
Other mics that I did like were sm7b and md421 which came across as being very similar in that application.
The re20 is a little different. It's probably a little more attacking and not quite as bassy; Certainly still a condenser, though.

I am a big fan of 421's, however If you wanted to save some money have a look at the Sennheiser e604 or e904 drum mics. I have used both in a live PA situation and got a great sound out of them.

This is true. I have the MD504 (predecessor of the E604) and It sounds remarkably similar to my MD421 on rack toms. For floor toms I still think the 421 is king.

I would just prefer to go with the "real thing" and buy the MD421s. I love the way they sound on toms!

The D112 is a good kick mic that is also excellent at bass, both electric and stand up.

You can use an e604 on the floor tom as well.

I would never try to talk anyone out of 421's , the e904 was just a suggestion if the budget was tight, 421's sound great on lots of things.

Toms, Kick, Guitar cabs, even Vocals.

Yeah I’m on a tight budget, but I know if I don’t get the 421's ill end up regretting it later on lol. So I might as well do it right the first time. Thanks for the suggestion though, very much appreciated!

I had a few 421's but most of the time I used the md504's, which were the precursor to the e604. I would use the 421's on guitar, kick, bass and floor tom, if someone came in with more than 4 toms. (I only had 4 of the 504's)

The sound of the 421's is great, but depending on the drummer's setup, it is sometimes hard to place them because they are so big.

Yeah they are pretty big. Do you think i will have problems setting them up on a 4 piece?

It depends where your cymbals are. As long as you have enough space over the toms, you are find.

I always ran into the problem of guys coming in with 6 toms angled so the top was pointing at the drummers head and the cymbals 1/4 inch off the edge of the toms.

It's always different when you are only micing your own kit. You can decide to make your own compromises.

I dont think i should have a problem then. I will only be recording my drumset for now.

The D-112 likes to be placed inside the kick, pointing halfway between the beater and the shell.
A Shure Beta 52 is a good choice, but needs to be placed just inside the vent hole, otherwise it can sound like a basketball bouncing. Same for the Audix kick mic.

I have never used the Sennheiser kick mic, so I can't comment.

The D-112 is a versatile kick mic. It can do all styles with different placements and EQ. Some other kick mics hare too EQ'ed to be used for some genres. The D-112 also works well on bass amps, acoustic bass and random percussion with a lot of low end.

It looks like You will be able to sneak the mics in just fine.

A 421 also makes a good internal kick mic, but usually needs an outside mic to beef it up a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions, I made up my mind on the e602 for the kick!
