drum micing with looow budget

hey, sorry if there has been a similar thread and i've missed it. Im looking to mic my set using only about $200-300, i've already got 1 sm-57, so im wondering what else to get. I was looking at this nady mic set for about $175, but i have a feeling that when i have more money to spend im ganna lose use for them, whereas if i buy another sm 57 or something i'll always have a use for that, but then on the other hand if i buy more sm 57's i wont really be able to afford enough mics to mic the whole set. wow that was sorta long and rambly. Anyway, thanks for any help guys.
 
how about an at25pro for bass drum or even an sp b1, and a pair of ecm8000 over head... or a single b1 or 603 over head if you don't need stereo. maybe blow the whole budget on just one nice mic if you have a decent room, use it out front of the kit and have the 57 close on either b.d. or snare for a little extra emphaisis. it really depnds on the sound your after. if your playing metal then lots of cheap dynamics on everything may give you a more "metal" sound
 
Sorry to hijack a thread...

If you had an SPB1, sm57, and sm58, but could only accomodate two mics... how would you go about it?

I really need to invest in some more, and better xlr cables, unfortunately I'm broke until tax returns...

For a very lo-fi album, I recorded with a 57 on snare and a Rode NT-1 about 2 ft off the ground and 3-4 feet in front of the set. If I remember correctly, I mostly used the room mic at mixdown, with just a little snare boost where needed. Sounded pretty good for a mono drum track.
 
Yah, man...

quality over quantity, anyday. Two good mics well placed will beat a slew of cheapies all over.
 
yah i think im ganna go with the less is more philosiphy and just get one or two more good mics. thanks for the advice guys.
 
Snare - 57
OH's - 2 X Studio Projects B1's @ $79 ea
Kick - Audio-Technica ATM25 @ $139

Total = $277. Done.

B1's are great on OH's. [ Out of over 15 LDC's we tested the B1 came out as the best budget OH mic along with Oktava MCO12's ] And later on when you get some other OH mics [ like if GT33's or GT44's are still on sale at GC ], you can drop the B1's down to tom duty - where they even do a better job. Get the ATM25, not the cheaper Pro25.

id put a AT ATMPRO25 on kick, your sm57 on snare, and a pair of Marshall MXL603's overhead.....under $300........
