if you want realistic drum sounds, get a high end drum brain from clavia (ddrum), roland (v-drum), or yamaha (dt-extreme). high quality realistic drum samples. each has their strengths.
if you want to be a little more creative, get a good sampler, though. if you want to go to the nines, get a software sampler like motu machfive or native instruments kontakt. if you want to stick to hardware, you can't beat the kurzweil k2600.
if you want to play cheap, there are a million options. i'd say forget the alesis sr16, it sounds one step away from fruityloops. get an alesis dmpro (or, cheaper, dm5) and some sequencing software.
