Ok, im about to set up my drum kit. Im planning on putting Neumann KM184 Mics as overheads. Neumann KM140 Mics as drum mics and an AKG D12E for bass drum. Iv also got AKG 414's and 2 rhodes nt2a's but dont know where to put them. I could use some for room ambience and some for more drums, but which are best for what?
:o

Might I ask your background? I realize it's none of my business, but for someone with mics like that to be asking those questions strikes me as weird.

SNAP maybe we both lost the same mic, nevermind the D112 is good enough for me untill I can find someone that is going to give me an EV RE20 for nothing (here's hoping) ;)

umm, i didnt buy any on ebay or anything. Im at Edinburgh university in Scotland, doing a music technology course. I've been kinda dropped in at the deep end and im furiously trying to learn as much as possible about everything really. For one of my assignments im recording a band demo - including drums. The uni provides a studio to do this in and a selection of mics that can be rented out (for free) Im glad to hear that these are good mics. The recording was on Saturday. I used the nt2a's as overheads and the d12e for the kick drum. I also added a Neumann (dunno if it was the 140's or 184's - i dont know the difference) to the kick to get a punchier feel. I miced the snare with 2 neumanns and put one on the tom (only one being used) and one over by the floor tom/ride. The 414's i didnt really know where to put and i didnt really have any space left on the desk to run them thru to Pro Tools. I had them set up for ambience but it was such a small room they never really did much. The drum sound is pretty good so far (still lots of post production to do) It good having a free studio with 24 hour access - tho this did mean we were in there from 9am till 6am the next morning!

In a music tech course can you tell me approx what you learn/do?
cheers im really interested in doing one but i kinda want to know what im letting myself in for.
cheers

Well i just took the course as an outside choice for my degree (Physics with Music) in the second semester so i missed the first half - hence my lack of knowledge in a lot of areas. In this course we worked with Pro Tools and learned the basics of it along with recording acoustically, recording sound effect, recording a short radio show and documentary, and fitting a soundtrack to some film. You learn how to handle a studio by yourself and some of the thiings you can do in them. Lots of recording. I'm changing my degree to Music technology next year as i liked it so much. I reccomend it - its a good course as you learn alot - not only do you need the technological skills but the musical/creative skills also.
