I am looking for a compressor to use solely on kick drum and for recording. I would like to know what is a good unit to use. I am looking for specifics, both brands and models. I am looking to spend around $500 or so, but I could spend more if I feel it is worth it. Again, I am looking for a high quality compressor, but at a descent price. Also, I will be interested in a compressor for snare with the same criteria at some point in the future. All recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

It's not a top-line, empty-yer-wallet device - but I've heard and read really good things about the Presonus BlueMax compressor. It only goes for around $160. I believe either Electronic Musician or EQ had a glowing review of the BlueMax recently - specifically it's use on the bass drum. I believe that the the BlueMax has a number of presets as well as the ability to go full manual.

I use the Presonus Bluemax to compress kick drum and it is good, but keep in mind it's the only VCA compressor I've ever used, so I don't have anything to compare it to. I use an ATM25 mic for kick drum.

I use an ART Pro VLA compressor for snare drum, and a Shure SM57 mic. It's an opto-electrical compressor and that's a popular type of compressor for snare drums. Makes them fat and really stand out in a mix, if you want them to.
I've also got great results with guitar and bass with that compressor. It's about $500.

HHB Radius 30 and Joe Meek C2 are also worth looking at if you want an opto-electrical compressor. VCA compressors are good because of their fast reaction to transients.

One tip- If you apply too much compression to a drum you can make it sound thin. I rarely look at the gain reduction meters and just rely on my ears.

The RNC compressor from FMR Audio works very well for drums. Their website has a neat trick for using 2 RNC compressors for doing a whole drum mix and really fattening up the sound. I tried it and it works great. The RNc is very inexpensive yet very well respected by many people. You can buy them from Mercenary Audio for about $180 each. It's very hard to beat at that price (or even 5 times higher than that price).

I went to the FMR Audio site and could not find what you were refering to - where is it? I have a few RNCs and I am trying to gain a better understanding of how to use them.
