Roland kit but with Acoustic cymbals and snare - riggering sounds my synths as well. (live/studio - same deal)

I vote for accustic drums. I have an old Tama 6 pc set with all Paiste cymbals. But, since my drums are in my brother's studio at his house and I do my mixing here at home, I opted to use samples. I use Toontrack Superior 2 and Ezdrummer. I find these to be quite fascinating to use if you want the sound of real drums.

My Roland Vdrum kit (converted acoustic drums) sounds great in a live PA, but as with all edrums, I can tell they are fake when I record them.

My primary kit is my acoustic one...I'll also use the drum tracks built into both my Yamaha PSR-DJX and my Korg iS35. The DJX is great if you're after dance and electronic sounds; the Korg has some decent all around rock beats.

My main kit is a 6 piece Premier Signia. I recently picked up a late 60's Sonor as well for a live kit and a different recording sound if needed.

I use acoustic drums mainly but if a song calls for it or I'm experimenting, loops and samples have worked well. There is nothing like a real cymbal though. I've used kick and snare samples to craft a beat but I always add real hi-hat and cymbals.

This kit is my recording set; Groove Percussion Jazz Kit w/ 16'' Kick, 12'' snare, 10'' tom and 13'' floor tom. They're small drums but tuned low and with MoonGel on certain heads to keep over-ring in check, they rule! Zildjian K's round it out. The 20'' K. Custom Dark Ride gives me a stiffy...:

Wow! I am quite pleasantly surprised to see most here are recording real drums. I get the impression from reading several recording forums that most home studios lack the space, the drums and the player to make it happen. Not true for those in this poll. Nice.

V-drums here. My acoustic drums are really worn/aged and are unuseable.

Well right now I'm mostly playing timbales and Congas, but when I seat down, it is mostly a Tama drum set, or whatever the drummer is using, (mostly to play Cuban tunes). Gerry Zaragemca

Though not a drummer {I play bass, guitar and percussion} and I record for the sheer joy of creativity, I've had a drumkit for the last 18 years coz I've been fortunate to be friends with people that play the drums. I can't remember the first kit I had, but I added and subtracted bits and pieces over the years. Then in 2004 my family moved and I thought that it would be better not to aggravate the new neighbours so I gave the kit to my nephew and bought a Roland TD6 {I added a mesh head snare and a TD10 module as it had 8 outs}. It was OK but it just wasn't the same and I found the cymbal and hi-hat sounds were inconsistent. Generally I have no issues with the sound of V-drums, I like them sometimes and even computer drums sometimes have their own sound that's just, well, their own sound. Sometimes it's a cool sound. But I like acoustic drums and both my neighbours (we live in a council estate) are cool as long as I don't go beyond 7pm so at the end of 2005 I sold the V-drums and bought an Arbiter flat lites kit. A couple of the cymbals and toms I had added to my original kit stayed with me and that's what I use. Everything fits in 2 bags and I have all kinds of fun playing Mr Engineer/ producer and learning about different drum sounds !

I've used electric in the past for studio work, but my main kit is a 1961 Gretsch Maple snare and 60's Slingerland Mahogany toms and bass. Best studio and jazz kit, ever.
Very mellow but still with a tight sound.

Your bass drum must be cold... I pity it.

I use PDP FS (birch) with A mix of Zildjian, Sabian, and Paiste cymbals (sticking to one brand is lamo). Pic shows my old EC2 Coated heads (EXPENSIVE AS HELL), but I've replaced them with good ole classic Emperor heads.

That is a sweet little kit! Small drums tuned lower are actually easier to record, in my experience, than bigger drums.

Premier Signia Custom - Maple shells 7 piece
Gretsch Blackhawk series with 24" bass drum 6 piece
Sears 5 piece - First drumset (sentimental value) still sounds awesome
Simmons electronic 5 piece (Yes I know.....I use it to trigger other devices)
Sabian, Zildian and Paiste cymbals.

Did the electronic thing for a little bit and thought about trying out some of the newer stuff but there's nothing like hitting an acoustic drum that has been properly tuned. Just my 2cents.
