Check your inbox. My response was somewhat detailed, and maybe a bit off-topic. So that's why I went off-thread.

I'm not sure what you meen by sim. Is that Boss pedal?

You took my last post well (i thought it was a little harsh but it's hard to shugarcoat things you want to say at times :D) so I'll offer a little more thoughts. Please take it as just IMHO staff. It's a nice song.

I don't know what you use for drums but they don't fit. It's more the feel of the pattern or the swing. You can hear it the most when you listen to guitar and drums together. You will hear that guitar is kind of "swingy" but the drums just chug along. As a result the song "falls apart" or it's not tight.

Also I'd try bass line with 16th it would push the song better, again IMHO.

I hope I don't sound like a "know-it-all" cuase I don't. Just offering some thoughts.

cheers

I have to explain that part about drums a little...

The drums DO work but you may (notice "may need to" :) ) need to change the way you play guitar with them or change drums a little.

cheers

Fed, I didn't think it was harsh at all, just good, honest criticism; and as such, extremely valuable.
By sim I meant that I used my sixstring electric directly into the br-1180, and dialed up a COSM acoustic simulation patch. Same for the infamous banjo sound, although it's actually an acoustic guitar sim also.
The drums are from a DiscreteDrums disk made especially for this unit. They're real drums which can be edited and looped. I originally had a slightly different pattern, but to me the kick was a little busy, so I simplified. Like you, I hear where the guitar/drums sound out of sync. I need to work on that.
Great idea about 16ths on the bass (bass also is played on sixstring, using onboard bass sim).
It occured to me that piano might be just the thing to replace the banjo-sounding pad...will take me a while to get that together, though.
Don't ever go easy on me, I accept all the criticism here in the spirit in which it is given. I appreciate the time and effort involved both in composing songs and in caring enough to listen and respond.

nice song. fits the genre perfectly :). i didn't hear the original version but imo you got some work to do on the mix.

The drums sounded real spacious and generally very good on their own in the beginning, but got drowned when everything else came in. They got lost in the mix and don't really have the punch that I'm looking for.

I don't like that guitar sound. I don't have one myself and no real experience with creating one so I don't think I can help, but that thing sounds really tinny. Is it a real guitar? Is it miced?

I like the banjo.

I looked at your unit looks pretty good.

You should barrow acc gtr if you don't have one and mic it. You'll like it much more me thinks. And ye I'm not sure why but the drums sound good in the begining and then it's like you put them in the closet. There is not too much going on in the song I would suggest to mute tracks one by one and see when the clarity of the drums comes back .. uh what do I know :) I hope it helps at all

cheers

good song

i hear the drum thing as well, but i can't get mine to sound half as good!! and the banjo was a great touch! what can i say, i liked it.

keep on keepin on!!

erichenryus: Thanks! I don't know what's stepping on the drum track, maybe vocals, or the banjo-sounding track maybe? Will have to solve that problem somehow. Fed's idea to mute tracks one by one sounds like the ticket.
Guitar is an onboard sim, so real acoustic would be better.
Jury's still out on the banjo track, running about 50/50. I might keep it but bury it a bit. Keyboard might be cool, if anybody would like to mess with it...
Thanks for listening and comments.

Fed: Both excellent ideas, will help very much, thank you!

Rick: Thanks very much, glad you liked it. Got your pro-banjo vote tallied. :D

and the poll is closed now

hey mkg...

I really like this song.

to me the best sounding part of the whole recording was the drum intro...great room sound to that.

next would be the background vocals...I think they work really well.

the lead vocal...volume wise is there...is just somehow a little washed out or something...maybe there is too much reverb on it? sounds a bit distant.

it doesn't have that "shimmer" that I think KY Pop could deserve...(close to nashville eh...kind of...hehe) but I think the mix is really nice and balanced...good work.

Now that I'm streaming in hi-fi mode--DOH!--I decided to listen again. man, those drums rock at the top! But, they kind of go away as the song strats up. I want those drums up!

Also, that direct acoustic is taking up all the frequencies of the track. Fed is right. Try micing it. When you do, pan it left some and the electric right some, or vice versa. It will open up some space for the vocal and BGV's.

Fed: I think I saw a hanging chad in there, I'm shipping the whole thread down to Fla. for a recount. :D

wes480: Thanks very much! I'm working on beefing up the drum track, and I hear the lead vocal a little washed-out also. It sounds muffled or something, maybe it is the reverb. I'll be doing some tweaking there, maybe re-sing it.

crawdad: I think you're right, the direct acoustic is eating the spectrum. From the start I just wanted it to carry some rhythm and add fatness, but the direct just ain't cuttin' it.
Got a gig this evening so I'll get back to work on the track tomorrow, with all suggestions in tow.
Did a little pre-mix messing around this morning and got the drums up where they belong, next mix I throw up (I love that phrase) should bring the drums out better.

Thanks,
Mark
