Dream a little....

Yes, I am excited too. I just need to figure a way to try that box out for a day or two (actually, a couple of hours with it would tell me all that I need to know about it).... :)

This guy has run a pretty successful studio for the last 4 years now. He has very good business sense, and is great at getting things rolling. He is not that technically inclined though (he has hird me several times to just come in a solder some cable and stuff like that). But, he has the gift of gab, a very possitive outlook, and an assurance that he can make a business fly, dosed with a knowhow of running it efficiently, and almost a sixth sense of what customers want to see.

Me and this guy talked about a sort of partnership about 2 years ago, but Echo Star was very young then, and my partner was more involved...things were doing well. But things change, his for the better, and my partner for the worse. I am excited about joining up with someone who is passionate about making this a career, and spots talent when he sees it. His willingness to take on more administrative and managerial duties and leave more technical things to people more dedicated to that type of stuff makes this a good union.

$15k is light, but, I will make do somehow. I think this only needs to last a couple years before a significant upgrade will happen (Sonic Solutions? we can hope...) So, I just need to make it work well in that budget, and accept some of the limitations.

Hey Rev, have you had a chance to deal with the new Tascam 24 bit DAT machines yet?

Okay, I don't know this guy, but I know situations. You said:

"He has very good
business sense, and is great at getting things rolling."

If he's got very good business sense, then he started with the 15K figure, but that doesn't mean he expects that limit to be firm. He knows things cost more than you want them to. (If there's one thing I learned from you, it's that!) 15K isn't that much, and God gave us bank managers for these types of situations, right? Show the man this thread if you have to, but get the gear you need to make this work. If he's really got the sixth sense of what customers want, he'll know how to milk a bigger investment in gear in terms of advertising. The difference is 10k. How many projects would that take to recoup?

Tell him: "I can put it together for 15K, but 25 will get you something they'll be talking about for a while."

Then he settles for 20K, and you're in a better position.

Dobro smiles, stretches, walks over to the beer cooler, and pulls out another Coors.

Oh geeze, where are my manners? Congrats man. I thought this might be more than hypothetical from the original post. Of course, you're way outta my league with the equipment requirements. So, it was worth paying your dues for the past several years, eh?

I always come in last on these good discussions cos when I'm awake youre all asleep - my bits worth is about running a successful studio - I reckon if you've got a studio make sure it is booked all the time even if it means cutting your rates to the bone. The publicity you get by having lots of clients is invaluable as everyone in town will be saying "Oh I was down at xxxx the other day cutting tracks!!" In no time you'll be no 1 in town.

That guys a lucky guy if he gets you to look after his gear sonus. A studio is useless if it doesn't have good technical services

Oh - Sadie is an interesting thought - I used it once in Brisbane and it was very good with good converters etc. It also was using removeble hard drives so you had a drive for each project.

Before anyone posts any more "I wouldn't use ADAT, etc...." posts, I should tell you that the studio this editing/mastering suite is going into is already established, and uses ADAT XT-20's. The owner wants a system to edit the tracks, and wants to do mastering with the same system. So while maybe ADAT's is not the first choice of multi-tracking, it is the format I MUST deal with.

Also, read "ADAT editing/mix mastering" suite. I don't need mic pre's, or microphones. I don't need a mixer, and it is looking like monitors and the computer and a DAT player are already covered. Mainly, converters, analog processors, software are what is needed. Also, read that the owner wants to compete with already established editing/mastering suites in town. So, an eye towards high quality, and dependable, well established products are a must.

Ed,
I have heard about a mastering system from a prominant German company called Spectral sytems.
I used there Audio card for a couple of months about 3 years ago and it was excellent and reliable. This was not a "Layla - Delta 1010 - Tripledat level. It was more of the likes of "Pro Tools".

I have head that they have a mastering system called "Audio Cubes" and it is suppose to be up to Sonic solutions standerd BUT... cost less.

Hey Shailat, if you can provide a link or something, that would be appreciated. I tried a search and don't think I came up with the product.
