DP-24 - I love it (so far)

Brand new recorder. Got it yesterday. I downloaded the zip file, extracted it and dropped it into the utility folder. I put it back into the DP-24, turned it on, but still on the old version. How do I update? Thank you.

Be sure that you're not dropping the whole extracted file into the utility folder. Open the file you extracted and drop only DP-24-51.102 in there.

No More freeze ups 24bit 44khz mode with the new firmware:guitar:

Hmmm Spoke too soon...
If you try to mixdown more than 3 stereo tracks you get nasty random clicks/pops
I guess we aren't meant to utilize 24bit/44khz:cursing:

just a note,i am using the fastest flash card available,so thats not the issue

Thanks for the help. Still having problems though. I dropped the DP-24-51.102 file into the utility folder as you recommended and then re-inserted the card into the DP-24 slot. When I turn the unit on, it still shows that it is running the original version (1.01 0043). Do I need to do something else to get the new version (1.02) to replace the older one? I seem to remember reading something in the 2488neo online manual where you had to hold down a 2nd button while powering up the unit in order to install an update. Do I have to do something similar on the DP-24?

Do you press and hold, at the same time, the mute and undo/redo buttons when starting up the DP-24???

Follow the instructions linked by Pitti in post #124 of this thread starting with #9 on the second page and you should be good to go.

Ah! I finally got it. bigwally, Pitti, animalgx, Thanks to you all.

You are welcome, good sir. I'm glad that your question fell within the 7% of the machine's capability that I currently understand.

My computer tech at work just did the whole update in less than 5 minutes. Barely glanced at the notes of how to by TASCAM...yeah

Hi all. I have a DP24 on its way to me as I type and am planning to use it in conjunction with a DAW (largely to sync soft synths/drum machines), though hoping to be able to do much of what I need inside the box.

I've actually been using old Akai multitrackers in a similar way for a while - my own DPS12i and a mate's DPS24 on occasion. However both are now very old and getting a bit glitchy, plus the PC interfaces and data storage aren't so hot, so time to update things.

One thing I really like though is that there are programs available for each that effectively allow mix automation on the 12i (the 12i doesn't allow this unaided) and PC screen display/audio edit control on the 24. (In the case of the 12i, the program will 'save' your mix changes which you can then play back to the unit).

What are the chances that Tascam (or a third party) might put out similar software to allow PCs to do this with the DP24? Or does this kind of software exist already - perhaps there are established ways to create automated mixes for the DP24 or the 2488 (obviously without the faders physically moving)? I'm not really on top of the finer points of MIDI beyond note editing and sync, so I'm aware this may be a fairly straightforward proposition. I see from the manual that the DP24 supports changing its mix parameters via MIDI, so I'm thinking it must be do-able.

Really informative discussion so far by the way. I'm looking forward to getting to play with the unit when it turns up.

Cheers

Stew

Thanks Peter, that's exactly the sort of thing I had in mind. I have just emailed to find out.

...and a very quick response from Mark at MixerMuse as follows:

I do not have a unit here but from what I can see it looks like the automation support on T2488 will work on the DP24. It looks like some of the effects presets and some of the effects have changed so there may be some differences there. I would recommend downloading the free demo and trying it out. Let me know how it goes. We will release support for it when we release version 2.0.0.0 and it will be a free upgrade for current users.

I will check it out once I've got the unit and had a play around. Does anyone know whether the DP24 will send MIDI data for fader movements? I had a response from Tascam indicating not, but I'm hoping they thought I meant via USB, not the MIDI out port.

Two months in with the DP-24, and my first "rejection email" . . .

from a British radio station. They were, however, exceedingly polite about it!

DP-24 or NEO

Hello,

first of all, sorry for my bad english. :o

I bought the DP-24 as upgrade of the Neo. I see the DP ambivalent.

The DP-24 looks nice and is smaller than the Neo. The new color display brings fun, but it reflects very much and if you don't look exactly from front you will not see any details. At this point is the Neo not so beauty, but also visible also from a side. The new colored knobs for effects and eq are great.
Also nice the 8 xlr inputs with phantom power in 4er groups.

Anyway, some features of the Neo I'm missing very much:

1) No way to rename tracks and virtual tracks. That feature I use on the Neo very often.

2) No way to rename marks. It's called always mark1, mark2 etc. On the Neo I can rename it and have a library for often used names like "chorus", "solo" and so on for easy use.

3) On the DP-24 I can use 8 dynamics effects at once, but only 2 if a guitar effect is used. The Neo can work with 8 simultan dynamics or 4 together with the guitar effect. That's a step backwards, I think.

4) The dynamics can assign only to the inputs. The Neo can use the dynamics also on the tracks, and then it can be per bounce printed on a new track. So I can record dry and compress it later at home. Of course, it is possible to use a effect aux pre-send per cable and bring it back into a input for recording it again compressed.

5) The virtual tracks are limited to 8 per track. The Neo offers 250 virtual track and this can be used like I want. I could use 100 virtual track as vocal takes and move them to any track.

6) The missing digital in and outputs of the dp-24 isn't a problem for me. I don't use it.

I'm wonder about the use of the record-button. For recording you need only press this button once. Not record and play simultan. This is the first multitracker with such a handling for me. I have to be wary of it.

A very good point is the working with the sd-card. Remove it from the dp-24 and put it in a card reader and you have all the tracks as wave format. Very easy and fast!

However, I'm happy to own a neo too. Would I forced to give up a machine, I would sell the dp-24 and keep the neo.

Sorry for my english again!

Best Regards from Berlin
Peter

I have sold my old 16 track tape recorders looking to down size to smaller equipment. I am looking at both of these models and would really like a good recomendation form this form on which one to go with. does anyone have the pros and cons on these units?

What have they been doing for the last 14 pages???:wtf:

Regarding the FW update: The release notes say some issues with MTC have been fixed. Has anybody had success using the DP-24 as MTC master with a DAW acting as midi sequencer for a slave?

well, since I have been out of it for many years I thought a nice person would provide that to me in clear english. but no, you had to reply. thanks for your assistance.

On the DP-24 looking for the foot switch model or what is used to punch in hands free when recording? can anyone help?
