Download and Mix Contest

Just got my stereo system back together. It's an old quad amp with 4 JBL Stadium speaker columns. Each column has a 3 way crossover, so you hear it all. It's set up in a 40' X 50' room with cathedral ceilings and plenty of furniture and has a great sound.

Your mix still comes through with too much bass. I even tried it out with just 2 speakers but it still came through muddy and too strong on the bottom.

I'm hoping you throw up another mix though!
LEMON TREE my apologies!!! Please see post 297 here for an explanation of the problem I was having. Your mix came through streaming with the windows media player and there is a problem with the player, not your mix. I also tried to edit my post with this review and it was too late, sorry my friend.

I downloaded your mix and it rocks, great job as usual :D

Anyone listening to streaming audio through windows media player (wmplayer.exe) should rethink it.

sorry so late...

i just got all the tracks loaded and stuff. This will be the first time i've done one of these contests, so i'm really looking forward to it....

...

When you asked me for a time and section, I downloaded the mp3 and played it on another player and I was a bit shocked at the difference. The part at the beginning where I was hearing the guitar getting lost sounded fine and also there was no pumping.

...After listening to your song on the other player I can only say that I hope to be able to do as well. That mix rocks, great job!

thanks for taking the time to determine this.

I stream from my Site often and have never experienced what you describe. There is a Lo-Fi Stream the site provides but I don't think I have ever listened to it. Maybe I need to disable the Lo-Fi option, if possible. Also, have you checked your player for a minimum quality option.

It's not your site, it's the windows media player that the stream was playing on. I tried listening to a downloaded file with the windows player and it has the same problem.

I checked the options that wmplayer has and you can add plugins and dsp's to it but I have none being used by it. It just handles somes mp3's really bad. It's all pretty interesting because I thought that the players were supposed to be pretty much transparent but obviously not.

I checked the Site and no controllable Lo-Fi option. I noticed though that the MP3 Download and Stram URLs say Hi-Fi. Maybe the site tries to determine either Hi-Fi or Lo-Fi based on the user's download speed.

I'm interested if you ever determine the issue.

Thanks for the feedback

Sounds good and well balanced. The reverb on the vocals is a little wet to the point that it sounds like reverb on the vocals.

Were the vocal reverbs "BAD" noticeable throughout the mix or just at the end?

I purposely add EXTRA verb on that last phrase to keep my mix from just going to virtually dead silence at the end of the song.

I guess that's a matter of opinion but I'm under the opinion that if I can here a processed reverb added then there's too much. I'm pretty sure I heard yours throughout but I'll have to give it another listen tonight. If it's only at the end I'll let you know.

Cool. I guess i am of the mind frame that I would rather have a little too much than not enough. If I were to go back and do another mix, along with automating the vocal levels, I would also automate the vocal reverb levels. I guess this is a side effect from growing up in the 80's. :(

hey I had some computer problems and lost everything I will have my mix up sometime next week but in the mean time if you want to she somestuff I have done in the past go to www.myspace.com/xerostudioswv and if ya like leave me some rep points

Hello everyone, I'm new here.
I have one question, how loud should my mix sound? Do I have to maximize it?
I ask this because some of the posted mixes are louder than mine.
thanks.

It is not supposed to matter, but do try and get it reasonably loud, but do not compromise your dynamics. You don’t have to be Nickleback.

I've been mixing this now for a few hours. I really like the HUGE room tracks. Did you say 1000 sq feet? I agree that there's no reason not to make the drums huge. I think I'm going to do this without any added reverb! No sample replacement either.

My mix:

It was fun to mix this! Thanks NL5!

WOW!!! The Techno Version!

The only think that bothered me about this mix is that the vocals sound like they got retuned to a key different to the song. Could just be me though.

I like the creativity of the mix though.
