That's it huh. ;)

You can use whatever plugins, outboard, or alien space technology you want. Hell, you can even reamp if you're so inclined. Just no new performances (i.e. overdubbing new parts, or redoing the current parts)

So, what was your old username? :D

it was localhost8080

but i couldnt use it cos i never did, am i alowed to reverse the phase polarity of the tachyon fields then =D

well

in addition to the 7band eq3 thingies and the comp/limiter3's (and a couple of Dverbs) ive fired in a frequaliser and a Q10 waves and one ssl channel

though im now drunk, it sounds like the best thing ever to me

i know its muffled, but ive had beer.

also id use an aphex instead of the q10 and the ssl comp for the low end, but i dont have one =(

its on the way from ebay though... gotta love the spinal tap...

i might have used a stereo widener in the first one....

this is a lot more plesent to my drunken ears just now, i bet it sounds crap in the morning....:o

Here's my first entry
I just realized how low the toms are in the mix. Still getting used to these monitors. Couldn't really get the kick sitting where I wanted it in the mix. Eh, whatevs. Gotta find something to reference this to

SOunds nice man.
Overall nice balance and tone, but its lacking some energy. Needs brought to life a bit.
The lead in the 2nd guitar i not nice though, I know its tricky getting the high mids to sound smooth for that guitar part though.

Nice one,
Eck

Mix 2
I decided to beef everything up and go a bit more with the "on-tape" feel, I think it works for this song even though it does present a little more apparent clipping at some points (actually all my meters were hovering around -0.5, so it might be L2 that's introducing that effect). If no one has gripes with this mix, it's my final. Oh yeah, question, is editing with Melodyne allowed? I'd do that for a client, but I'd also consider that replacing a part, so... if it's not allowed, I guess this is my final mix, I'm pretty satisfied with it.

Sounding fuller. cymbals are a bit loud but they do add energy to the mix.
Can I ask how you got rid of the hollow sound from the kick drum?

It seems the hollowness comes from the mids around 1k (not something Ive ever encountered). I cut there and also in the low mids but Ive still got that "kicking a spacehopper" sound. :)

Cheers,
Eck

Mixed the original kick with a Drumagog-triggered sample from my old drummer's kit :) Worked like a charm. But yes, I had to bring the mids down a ton on the original kick to get rid of the volleyball effect.

Does that not go against NL5s rules?
NL5: "you must use only the tracks provided"

I'm a cock, I know. :D

Hey, I'm using the kick track provided still!
But I could probably pitch shift the snare and get close to the kick sound I've got right now XD

Drumagog is fine, melodyne is fine. We had contests in the past where peopel re-played guitar parts, added keys, whatever. That is not allowed. Treat this like the band was your client, but they are out on tour and can't re-record anything. :)

Gotcha.
Now if only I had Drumagog. :(
Ach well Ill try adn get the vocals in tune with auto tune.

Are there any second opinons on my two versions?

Version 1

Version 2

Version 1 is loose in the low end.
Im not digging the snare, sounds like you have used alot of the bottom snare and the reverb is a bit fake. Try cutting the hi end from the reverb.

Overall smooth mix, just loose in the lows.

Try importing a commercial mix and compare the low end and low mids on it to your mix. That should help loads.

Thanks Eck. :p These are the same two files I posted before, and I have not made any changes since your last review. I appologize for not stating that. I was just curious if anybody heard anything else aside from what you heard earlier before I start making my changes.

lol.
I kinda thought Id heard that mix before. :)

Your mix is pretty muffled in the low end.
Sounds funny when the song kicks in.
Id take some low end off. Try for a deep but real tight low end.

Phat snare drum!
Toms are too boomy.
I like how you didn't make the kick drum too slappy. I hate kick drums that are too slappy, and this song is crying out for a light slap rather than a full whack on the chops. :D

Not bad,

Now that I look back the first time you said the snare was "Phat", now with the exact same MP3 you say you are not digging the snare. Did you listen to it through two different systems? if so, is it not translating well between the two?

Anyone else?

Listening on my usual set up.
The snare is phat, it has a nice full low end. I like that part of the snare just not the high endy reverb and too much bottom snare.
I hadn't started mixing the song when I listened to your mix for the 1st time I'm sure, so I didn't know what could be made from the snare.

So don't worry translation is not a problem here.

Hi guys!

I haven't been in here for quite som time now. Ain't sure anybody remebers me, 'cause I havn't been a frequent writer, most a reader, picking up som tips and trixs!

Anyhow, I couldn't keep my fingers away from this thread, so I gave it a try between my studies and everything else...=)

Heres my contribution: http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=10532

I listened to some already mixed ones, so I might been a bit inspired..! (Take that as a comlpliment)

I've just moved to a new room so I would appreciate some feedback (bass heav and so on..).

/Chip
