ok here's mine.

only spent 2 hours on this.

Although it's not my typical genre of mixing I feel I could have done a lot more with this but I've had so many issues with the board in the studio today I'd just given up on this hatchet job.....time for an overdue service.

I haven't been in here for quite som time now. Ain't sure anybody remebers me, 'cause I havn't been a frequent writer, most a reader, picking up som tips and trixs!

Anyhow, I couldn't keep my fingers away from this thread, so I gave it a try between my studies and everything else...=)

Heres my contribution: http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=10532

I listened to some already mixed ones, so I might been a bit inspired..! (Take that as a comlpliment)

I've just moved to a new room so I would appreciate some feedback (bass heav and so on..).

Sounds cool. The left guitar is louder so this is making it unbalanced in the sides. A bit dull in tone overall.
But good stuff.

The right lead guitar at the start is quite brittle. I'm liking your snare, really nice sound. Cracky and nice high end.
Bass guitar is sounding nice.
Vocals are too loud for this genre. You really want to try and bring out the power of the song for this genre. Try sitting the vocals in the mix so they dont take away from the power of the guitars, but also are present and clear.

Nice one,
Eck

lmao

u noticed then =P

kinda hard to miss....

though it doesn sound good on the clean guitar effect...

maybe if i had more cpu power id make a mashup of the compressed yin with the clean guitar sound of the last one..

Thanks for the review ecktronic

Ok, yes I felt that one comeing... A bit dull, that might be becuase I now mix in my bedroom with a bed and some clothes hanging around, before this I was in a basement with concrete walls=)

Ok, it was my intentions to push the left guitar a bit higher than the right one.. So is this a matter of taste or is it rather annoying?

Apart from that, is the overall balance Ok?

Cheers for the listen and comments, eck.

I deliberately had a crack at this before I went and listened to any others. (been sitting here listening to about 10 dif. versions for the past hour now). I think now the vocals may seem a bit loud because I've kept as much bottom end on them as I possibly could after reading NL5's post about recording them slightly thin at the source.

The snare sound, infact the overall kit sound I was quite pleased with. I'd never worked with that many mic's on a kit before, I'm usualy RE20 on kick, 57 on snare and 2 SP B1's for overheads so I had tons of new stuff to try and mess about with.... compressing the bottom heads on the toms and bringing them up just under the top heads with slightly spaced panning. I also duplicated the room mics and put them on a low pass fliter and flipped the stereo and smashed the arse out of them and brought them up just under the rest of the kit....before that my snare was sounding a bit thin, that's what brought my toms to life and filled out the kick in the right places too. After that I didn't need much from the overheads so they got a high pass filter and a small sprinkling of vocal plate from the lexicon Alex, used a bit more of that on the bottom snare mic too. I used quite a lot of gates (FLOORFISH) on kick, snare T&B's and tom T&B's. Couldn't get the EQ cuts I wanted from the board so I used the Pultec Pro on the UAD-1 and I ran it out to the drawmer LX20

Same for the bass, Pultec Pro and out to the LX20

Vocals got a bit of LA2A (uad) some EQ off the board and a (tiny) bit of vocal plate from the Alex, slightly more on the harmonys.

The 3 guitar tracks were just small EQ cuts from the board then stereo bussed and sent out (waits for a boot up the arse) to a Behri MDX2100 and slipped back in underneath what was already going to the L/R mix.

Like I said, major issues with the board today...buss 1 & 2 kept cutting out and I had to repeatedly crank the faders full on to get signal to pass then bring them back down again. I also seem to have develpoed a bit of a ground loop on the AUX returns....am sure you can hear it humming away when the song cuts dead at the end.

I'll probably give this another week to see what final mixes come in (I doubt I'll be submitting another one) then I'll do a review of all at once. Maybe someone could put all the entry links in one post (for the lazy buggers). :p

Ok, this will be my last attempt on this song.

Ecktronic, thanks for the feedback. That's what gets me going man!

For this time I have tried to make the guitars less harsh, at the same time I made som changes to the snare... Think I like it better this way, but it might be my ears fucking with me.. (Is there even a change of sound?)

Well, I really enjoy these "mixing-duells", count me in for the next one=)

It seems not many people are commenting on the mixes here.
There are a good number of them, but hardly any critique.

This is my 1st stab at mixing this song. I got a few things I want to work on, but I wanted to post something since I have not posted on this board in ages.
The panning of the guitars hit me first.
The balance seems to be leaning to the left slightly.

Tone overall is quite dull.
The backing vocals sit nicely under the main vocals.

The overall dynamics are a bit flat. Try and bring out parts at certain points in the song.

The mix is lacking width. Try panning things more to get a bigger stereo field.

Not bad,
Eck
