If I use a 4-channel tube pre-amp in conjunction with the firepod, Will it be an over-kill? How would you set it up? Mic>tube pre-amp>Firepod?

Then it's ok to go line in on the firepod from your tube micpre. It's not a good idea though to come out of one micpre then into another micpre.
Just watch your gain structure.;)

What better ideas there are to improve the signal without tossing out the firepod? EQ unit? Compressor?

No just come out of the tube micpre into the firepod. Those are combined XLR/1/4 inputs on the firepod. and if you need to ..... that is if your tube micpre only has XLR out just get an adapter!

In case it wasn't clear, you need to go into the 1/4 input on the firepod.

EQ's and compressors don't improve a signal, they just change it. The less stuff you run a signal through, the more integrity the signal has. You only do other processing when the original signal isn't what you want it to be.

Good point.

On the back of the firepod there's a pair of unpowered line-in-are they the ones you were referring to? Otherwise, it'd make little sense for a signal to go through two different pre-amps...Am I understanding this right?

Yes. That would be the correct place to connect a preamp.

The more ins , from different means, will give you more opportunities to get the sound you're looking for.
