Your recording chain is only as good as it's weakest link. Engineer's experience should on top, ya think?

that cud be anever ending argument. Even if you have the best engineer - if the drumemrs poop then you wont get a good sound. Its a conbination of all of those things.

Umm yeah. Mmm. If the player is a star, then his performance wll hopefully shine through. But if the player is crap, the best engineer in the world will have a hell of a lot of work to do to fix the parts up (even WITH beat detective it'd be hard).

But yeah, different strokes for different folks. But I'm sure I could get a happening drum sound with the condensor built into my mate's Fostex 8-track (and a bit of compression I guess), as long as it was a good player on a good kit in a good room.

A friend of mine managed to warp his snare. It's only an 8 lug with pressed hoops but it's got a steel shell.

Maybe they used that new balsa steel

I've been doing that with my acrolite since 1979 with no problems. For about 5 years in the late 80's and early 90's I was using kevlar heads tuned pretty high. The acrolite is made of aluminum. My supraphonic is steel and don't have any problems (since about 1985) I don't know what happened top your friends snare, but I don't think it was the way he tuned it.

What are you using now?

I've had a kevlar head on my snare for a couple of years, tuned tight and I like it. It's virtually unmarked, tough as elephant hide

I'm using Evans Genera HD Dry heads on all my free floaters and my 5 inch supraphonic. The 6.5 supraphonic has a clear emperor on it right now for recording. I still have an Aquarian powerhouse on my ludwig cow. I don't play live very much any more so I don't need the kevlar heads any more. The main reason I used them was so I wouldn't break them during a show. I did however put a stick through a Remo Fallam on 2 occasions. The Aquarian Powerhouses I've never broken.

I did have a friend that was using the kevlar heads and tuned them so high that the shell collapsed. (a year later he tore the luggs off of a wood snare the same way) I would assume that is what your friend did to his.
