don't let it end

ok, i'm gonna go back to work on this....add some more harmonies throughout the song....work on the drums a bit.

macle, guitars were tracked before the drums and i suck at the guitar so i will be unable this year to get that in the pocket. i must find a band to work with at some point. the roll at 1.25 will go. why i thought that sounded good i don't know but it really doesn't. thanks for pointing it out. i just might try the volume automation if i have the patience.

badgas. thanks for the words.

triple m. i really like the bass sound as well. i use it on everything. it's a roland preset 'finger bass'. i'm gonna guess that you're using up your monthly bandwidth all at the beginning at the month!? go get a cable modem man. i'm especially jealous of anyone who has access to high speed and don't buy it. i don't even have the chance....arg.

crawdad. the drums are td-8 mostly. cymbal crashes are NI. thanks for the feedback on the harmonies. oddly enough it's the thing i spend the least time on...but like doing the best...

Isn't it funny how that works. I spent about 5 times longer doing the freaking tambourine on my latest offering as I did All vocals. Again, I need help.

here comes a drum nazi

nice vocals.. I really like the female harmonies.. I always wanted to work with a chic.. There were a few drum things I wasnt crazy about, and the sound of them was a bit strange at times, but I don't like my own drums either.. I really liked the harmonies.. I would put more of them in there... the vocals were really good.. nice tune man.. I didn't like the way you let it end though!

I just read about the harmonies.. so it's not a chic, but they're still very good... Your a good singer man.. The fade out seemed too quick..

About the drums, did you used the TD-8 on this? I recognize that snare..

Sabbath, you were the second person to call me a girl in the post! Most of the singers I like are girls so I'm not offended. I really do want to just sing and work with other people who know what they are doing to do the rest. ie. I want to find a band to work with.

The drums were the Rosewood kit and I messed with the snare to make it real ringy and snarey but that didn't really come out in the mix. Every once in a while I doubt the wisdom of purchasing the vkit and think I should have just gotten a real kit instead, but it sounded so good when I played it in the stoor and I am really prone to large impulsive purchases.

chris, i thought the tamborine playing on your last post was very good so the hard work and cussing payed off for you imo.

i'll be back with changes after the weekend.

Hey man, it looks like you've been pretty well taken care of here, but I downloaded this last night and got pulled away. Just got to listen, and very glad I did. You have some terrific ideas flowing here. Great vocal and acoustic parts- sometimes beautiful in fact. There are moments where the vocal and the guitar just dance together quite gracefully.
2:20 break needs some work IMO. What about little bass and kick accents to push it a little? Just a thought.
Anyway, very nice song man. Good job!

Hi Eric, I hope my comments weren't too harsh, after I wrote my second post, I thought maybe it was too negative. I hope you're not overyly bummed out about the drums and the recording, cuz I see your comments about wanting to get other people and stuff.

"Every once in a while I doubt the wisdom of purchasing the vkit and think I should have just gotten a real kit instead, but it sounded so good when I played it in the stoor and I am really prone to large impulsive purchases. "

I know what you mean, cuz I've gone through all that working with sample CDs and drum machines, and the good thing about them, I think, is they sound slick and punchy straight away. And it's really hard to get a slick and punchy sound out of a real kit, a fucking nightmare, in fact, especially if you've got a mediocre kit, a shitty mic selection, and a horrible sounding room. But in the end, for me, I'd rather have a more real sound, even if it's not that great, then one that stands out as a sound that seems, ummm, too 80's. :p

But, like I said people have different tastes. I'd be curious to know if there are any (pro) CDs out that use the vkit type sounds. If anyone wants to suggest, cuz maybe I'm out of it regarding these vkits and drum machines, other than hiphop/r&b/electronica type stuff, obviously, but they usually use really over the top sounds (808, 909, or whatever) that aren't trying to emulate a real kit.

Anyway, I wasn't gonna say anything about drums anymore, that's why I blamed Twist!

Maybe just get a snare, and put a brush track on this tune, I think that would be cool. Okay, I'm done, I'll shut up now.

Great singing, great song!

Macle (a drum Nazi no more)

I'm saving up for some V-Pads myself.. I've heard quite a few recordings where it was impossible to tell they were electric drums.. now that I think of it, there is a guy here that goes by the name of Sittin Idol, and he uses V-Drums, and you would never know if he didnt tell you.. I think there is a big difference using the V-pads as opposed to the PD garbage I've been using.. Who knows..

anyway, cool tune..

Listening again at work this afternoon..........

...........great song Eric.

ya know.................

................maybe what this could use would be some congas and accessory percussion. The drums sound too 'rock' for this song IMO. The vocals are nice, especially the harmonies, and the acoustic and bass both sound good. Personally, I wouldn't turn down anything, I would think more in terms of bringing the drums up.....but not just louder, give them some more 'weight'. And I would really like to hear this with a more accessory percussion sort of rhythm. I think it would complement the song a lot.

B.Sabbath, I checked out SittinIdol, thanks for that. I don't know, it's funny when you start focusing on stuff. The drums did sort of have that overly clicky sound a bit. But I don't know. I listened to Nirvana after that, and they supposedly did drum replacing, and the snare and kick sound kind of fakeish when you focus on them, but in general, it seems bigger sounding. I think the cymbals play a big part, making sure they fill in to give it more of a live energy. Then I listened to Radiohead's Karma Police, (that's a great drum sound to me, if anyone knows how to get that, btw), and who knows, maybe it's faked up a bit, there's a lot of compression on it, for sure, but it sounds more, I don't know, solid or dimensional. Then I listened to John Lennon's I'm Losing You that he did with the guys from Cheap Trick, and that's just a solid drum sound. I think there's something about the combo of the cymbals with the snare, and the snare has more of a crack with the sound of the snares, as opposed to a knocking sound that those vkits seem to have. And then the tom sound on those vkits always seem to be the major give away. And when you do a roll on the snare, on the vkits it seems like dutdutdutdut....where on a real snare there's that sound, a drummer would know, that really fast marching band flam thing, has a name....

But, I guess it's really just preferences, certain sounds that I prefer, so I'll stop knocking people's drums (I mean I'm not even close to happy with my drum sound, so... :o  :( )

Macle (going off on drums on Eric's thread cuz he's bored today...)

macle, too late to turn back. i already sold the kit to the kid next door and bought a used rogers set........now i'm goin to kill myself.....

:)

Really, i'm glad people pointed out the drums. That's what I'm here for. I want snap honest feedback. Like when you said the roll sounded fake. i went back and listened and suddenly yuk, how did i miss that? not just cause you said it and your macle, king of that home rec pro sound. it really does sound like shit. i agree. i mean sometimes shit is shit and you can't get rid of the smell.....usually you don't hear the individual strokes in a drum roll.

so i won't be getting rid of the kit soon cause #1 i don't have nearly enough time and money to make a real kit sound good in my basement and #2 i have a wife who just loves the sound of the vkit when i'm wearing headphones. real drums are real loud! #3 my nephew just loves it when i replace all of the sounds with his voice, burps, and farts..entertainment for hours.

guernica, thanks for the double listen.

Lt. Bob, I was having a fuck of a time with that snare. everytime i turned it up, it brought everything down. i'm going back to work on this tomorrow.

Sabbath, I think there are cheaper options than roland mesh pads. I think Pintech are basically the same thing, half the price. They just don't have the rubber rims.

All, thanks for your help and pointing out stuff. you are all too cool for listening and commenting like that. I have pretty thick skin I think so let the constructive stuff fly...I have plenty of family and friends who can tell me that I'm a rock star and make me feel real cool.

Aah hah! Now I get it! How much are these Vkits?

Nice vocals on this one! I actually thought the drums could use a little bit of a boost in the mix (maybe just on my end) ... surprising since you're a drummer :)

Very good writing.

There are a lot of acoustic tunes on the board right now. Pretty cool all around!

Nice Job! :)

Hearing some Billy Joel here... guitar almost sounds like an expertly played keyboard with a good guit sample sound... at least during the verses...

Nice jazzy guit break there... Yeah, those drums could come up... would be nice to get smacked in the face with the snare... at least a bit more... right now, it's a polite face pat... not that it needs a bitch slap, or anything ;)

Guit timing is a tiny bit off after 2:20... very nice vocal harmonies... a sleepy little number...

Was thinking about "Styx" when reading the thread title... and yeah, ACTUALLY, during the BGV part... I was a bit reminded of Styx...

Not bad... you'll do well here :)

The begining was a bit sudden..I don't klnow if that makes sense. I can't really get used to the vocal style. drums are a little machiney.

What do I know.

I guess just not my style.

I'm gonna get flamed by someone.

Damn, sorry for the confusion, this comment was for another song. I should stop using so many windows at a time. My first comment stands.

I flame myself!
Bastard!
