Does this sound right?

More of less, I'm concerned about the electric guitars, and if they sound like they've been tracked right. I have very little experience with recording electric guitar and micing amps. I tracked this basically using the information provided in the mixing and guitar forums, and this is the result. Hopefully it's good.

Example of the Electric Guitar. Double tracked and hard panned. MXL 990 Condenser and Shure Beta 58 w/o screen were blended for each guitar track.
Ignore the bad Fender Rhodes part. I'm not done with it yet. ;)

Thanks,

Alex

Gotta bump this one. I would really appreciate some feedback.

That's some good rhythm guitar playing. The L/R parts are pretty tight rhythmically - just loose enought to give the song a happy feel to it. Actually, this song sounds kind of similar to "I'm Henry the Eighth, I Am" by Herman's Hermits, a great tune IMO.

The sonority of the guitars is just a little muted...are they compressed? If so, I'd slow the attack and reduce the ratio a bit.

Other than what Tim mentioned, they sound pretty good. It would be nice to hear the secondary guitar track some more near the end of the song just a tad more. It's hard to discern it's melody.

Yes, I have Cubase's default DynamicsVST Compression settings turned on. I'll make note of those suggestions.

This recording is a backing track for live vocals of the Lullaby from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The song was written for an eariler production and had a very light ballad/lullaby feel to it. For this production, we were going with a rock theme, and a punk concept version was created, but was a bit too much. This is the compromise, and I'm pretty happy with it.

David--what are you referring to as the secondary guitar track?
All that's on the track are the double-tracked rhythm guitar, bass, drum machine, and Fender Rhodes Electric Piano.

Are you speaking of the Rhodes? (It can sound very guitar-like at times)

Thanks so much for the feedback. I was simply worried on my physical engineering and mic placement for this, but I'm glad to know it sounds ok.

This is a very nice sounding recording. Tight and clean. Great little tune.

I see what you mean about the Rhodes. Having owned one for a while I'm almost never fooled by a fake. But it more or less does the job.

It seems that this particular mix has the emphasis on the guits. The bass is there, but barely. Would like to hear more bass. (I almost always say that!)

Nice job!!!
