My uncle who has previously recorded with his band with a simple home recording set up of mics and track recorder told me about this trick

--- If you place a large diaphram condensor mic in the middle of the room so it picks up all the instrument and can give your music a new tone and liven it up

Is this true or not worth the time and money?

if it is would a Audio technica 30 series tube mic work, or is there a better mic to use?

yer - its know as a "room mic" (god knows why!!!). You can use it to add depth and liven up a recording for sure. Its a commonly used technique.

what kind of room mic would be a good choice, Shure SM57?

aren't those, those little clip on ones ... why would you use that

I remember see a photo and a description in a recording magazine and it looked like they had a large diaphram mic in the middle

omni means the mic isnt directional, its picks up the sound from all around, hence it being usefull as a room mic. You can get mics that have a switch to change between the different pickup patterns. These can be very usefull mics when it comes to using the mic in lots of different applications. For example a C414 - these are expencive, i dont have one (or anything close!) but i have used one them as room mics with good results.

well i dont think scratchin bear had any idea what you were talkin about ethier so i thought id ask

I wasn't insulting you at all. It is just friendly advice. Sorry if you took offense.

If your doing the typical bedroom or garage recording you might want to pass on room mics. They sound great if the room sounds good, but if your room sucks so will the recording.

Another mic reference source

Both DPA and Neumann are usually over a beginners budget but both have excelent references. Neuman on their infopool/general info/documents page has a download for the book try this link for direct access but go to their site for a lot more references etc.Microphones

I'm not real experienced and both the DPA ref in an above post and this Neumann book were great helps here when I was real green.

what would be a good mic (beside just omni) an actual brand or model number

For a beginner.........CAD M179 (has a wheel for all sorts of settings, from cardioid to omni
Studio Projects B3
Both can be had under $2oo and will work for vocals as well

what about a audio technica 3035 Vocal mic

I use it fo my vocal but can it be used for a room mic

any mic can be used as a room mic it just depends on what you think sounds the best ..... give it a shot try it
