Does anyone write christian based songs?

Jeap,

I apologize for the impressions you got from my post but I honeslty don't understand where your impressions are coming from. What you have accused me of and what I have tried to communicate are not anywhere close. I am truly sorry if you have been offended because you thought I looked down on you or whatever.

Communicating with out being able to see facial expressions and tone of voice is very difficult.
It seemed to me that you came in on the attack of Christian music and stated that the Bible was "little more that fairy tales". You of course are welcome to your opinion but you can't expect to come into a thread specifically addressing Christain songwriting and attack everything we believe, attack Christianity and call yourself a Chrisitian without causing some confusion. I am not saying you are or are not a Christian (only you and God know). You have no idea if I am either other than I claim to be. I honestly can't tell from your post if you consider yourself a Christian or not...

Your definition of "Presbyterian" with the prodigal son thing is nothing I have heard before perhaps they teach that in the Catholic Church but that is not the meaning that is assigned to it where I come from. I'm not saying it is right or wrong but it is news to me. I have never been in the Catholic Church so there is a whole world of other terms ther I am not familiar with.

I do not consider myself righteous in any way except by the grace of God He offers a relationship with us as if we were righteous. I have not earned anything so I can be proud of nothing.

Perhaps you could be more specific in your intentions and I will be more specific with mine.

I had hoped to discuss the issues of songwriting and the creative process as a Christain and find fellowship here with other Christians. I did not come here to debate the accuracy of the Bible or how bad churches are. Fed and I have discussed this via private e-mails and I explained to him that I did not want to be resposible for taking the thread too far off the subject. I did not accuse anyone esle of doing so.

That being said I will defend my beliefs and debate passionately and logically when they are challenged. I would expect you to do the same. After a period of time my honest impression was that you were more interested in stirring up a reaction than an honest discussion. What do you mean "you were lucky to get out of there alive"? I don't think you are being literal but I don't understand what you are implying.

It was my impression that the common rules on these boards were to loosely stay within the topic of a thread or start a new one and keep them in their designated places. I am not the moderator here. I simply wanted to check in with the other participants because our personal discussion seemed to have stopped others from participating and from discussing the original purpose of the thread. My impression now is that everyone has been reading along and enjoyed the discussion so far.

If you can specifically explain where you felt I belittled you I will try to restate my comments in a better way.

I do believe 100% in the accuracy of the Bible. It is my reference point for truth, it defines Christianity for me. It defines God and His will for mankind. It defines sound doctrine and tells us to study it to prevent false doctrines from creeping in and decieving us. If you or anyone states something on this thread that to me contradicts the Bible I will call them on it. I want and expect them to correct me if I do the same. If we have a disagreement on the interpretation of the Bible then we can agree to disagree and move on.

God gave all of us free choice and contrary to what you might believe; I have no interest in pushing anyone in any direction against their will or by using guilt. That defeats God's plan and purpose for everyones life.

While I am in no way anywhere close to being without fault; the description you have made of me and the description of me from people that know me are not of the same man.

To judge a man is very different from looking at the Bible and judging wether an activity is consistant with God's Biblically expressed will for our lives. Paul chastised Peter for falling into peer pressure when the converted jews told the gentiles they needed to be circumcised to be saved. What Peter went along with was not what Jesus had taught but was the teaching of men.

Did Paul judge Peter? No.

Did Paul point out that Peters actions were inconsistant with Christ's teaching? Yes.

Did Peter get all offended? I don't know..I don't think the Bible says what Peters first reaction was but he did realize he was wrong and changed.

Jeap,
Please explain to me where I judged you. I only pointed out that you saying "Jesus said it is allright not to be involved in church" is inconsistant with what the Bible says.

If I caught a friend stealing something to feed his family I would advise him that there is a better way to provide for his family and that stealing is against the law and I don't want him to go to prison.

Would you define my intervention as judging him?

My definition of judging someone from the biblical perspective is to devalue their worth, condemn them, appraise them as worthy of condemnation.

My example is the woman caught in adultry that they brought to Jesus to be stoned.

Jesus said to let whoever was without sin cast the first stone. Obviously no one was worthy to judge her to end her life. (I wrote song about that one that is very close to my heart.)

Jesus did not say they were wrong to notice what she did was sin and to define it as such as prescribed in the law of the time.

On the contrary Paul sets out the proper way to approach a brother living in sin within your local church. This is my paraphrased version.

Step One: You go to him in private, out of love, ask him to repent and offer your prayer and support.

Step Two: If they repent - rejoice and embrace them. If they refuse; take another brother with you and again ask them to repent.

Step Three: If they still refuse, bring him before the elders and the church and again discuss their ongoing actions that specifically go against the scripture and if they still will not change their activity you must disfellowship them. I would never want to do that myself. I don't want that job! There may come a time when I will have to but I hope not.

That is not judging the person but judging their actions or words without bias according to the Word of God.

I specifically pointed out some of your words were inconsistant with the Bible.
I did not judge you, your heart, your intentions, your intelligence or your value or belittle you in anyway or falsely accuse you as you have done me.

You implied in a condensending way that I did not really want to go to church but since I had to go I wanted to make everyone else go. I replied to clear up the misunderstanding you seemed to have about my motives - not to define who should or should not go. Infact I said if you don't want to go then I don't want you to go either. I am not intersted in pushing anyone anywhere they don't want to go.

I addressed you as my friend out of respect that regardless of you beliefs and wether or not I agree with you I can still be your friend. I can still respect you and wish the best for you.

I honestly don't see where you found offense in that.

If you are sincere (I am not being sarcastic here) then lets take it down a notch and discuss it more clearly if you like and since everyone else does not seem to mind.

I also welcome George, Fed any any other Christians to help see any "logs or specks" in my eye that I am not seeing.

Did anyone else here interpret my posts the way Jeap has interpreted them?

Hi George!!

Hi George...It's been a while since I've seen any posts from you. Good to see you back. This certainly has been an active post hasn't it?. I agree that much of what we see here perhaps would be better in the Cave, as I believe your original intent was to talk about songwriting with a Christian perspective. I have found over the years that the people who are the most fervent in their protesting Christian ideas and concepts are often crying out in the wilderness for someone to give them a word or thought that will "plant the seed" of their salvation. Once that seed has been planted , it serves no purpose to pound them into submission .
Do you agree that it is possible that jeap and Royston and some others who insist on keeping the dialog going could fall into that category? I'm just kinda thinking out loud ( on the kbd) but what's your take on the idea?? Otherwise , since they don't seem to want to talk about their Christian songwriting activities, why would they want to hang out here?? I'm just rambling , I know , but couldn't help asking. I've been working on a choral arrangement of one of my songs , "ALLELUIA EMMANUEL" for a mens choir that I sing in. Pretty cool actually. Lots of solid fellowship, you know, "steel sharpening steel " kind of thing.

Jeap,
dude I'm sorry you felt the way you did, I tell you even with my limited english I didn't see any hostility or "down-talking" or condessending tone in ScooterB posts and I was watching and reading :) ... he meerely addressed your posts and I have to admit that his interpretation of your words was the same as mine...

and ofcourse ... who cares about denominations??? ... Christ certantly didn't set up any...

I don't want you to feel like we're "ganging up" on you.... cause we don't... I for one.. felt for you and sensed some bitternes in your posts... that you got burned and hurt by some "brothers"...
I dunno... here I go with the sencing thing again... and God is my witness there was no jugment in my heart (and neither anybody else's I think) I am too much aware of my own sins and strogles to judge anyone... however ScooterB is right about using the Bible to desern right from wrong and be able to point it out...

And againg I don't meen that you are the one we should be pointing to... :)

anyway... "peace be unto you" :)

Chazba,
choral arangement sounds fun, how do you go about aranging something like that... we just started to create a comunity choir at our fellowship but it's dificult because not everyone can sight read and all... people are at different levels and abilities.

my wife and I put our homestudio setup to good use and made CD's of harmonies for people so they could learn them...

another chalenge was to mic them at the church... what do you use to do it?

Oh ye I am kind of glad this thread is not in the cave... it's dark, cold and wet in there.... smells bad too... :) this thread would be quickly turned into "crap-shoot" (I think that's a right word for it)

Hello chazba;

It is hard to steer this thread within the lines of it's original intent. Religion, because of its vast scope and differences, will always be a highly charged subject. Although confrontational, to discuss religious views and opinions here in this thread I guess is some what less threatening. You can imagine where this dialog would have gone in the Cave. There would have been no mercy.

Meanwhile, back on track,...

I've been doing a lot of writing. We just released our third CD project. A single released from it called, "Heart of a Child" is #95 on the Christian Country Music charts in the first month stats. We were contacted by CCMA to perform in their new artist showcase at their national convention in November.

I finally got around to posting mp3's in the Clinic. I had posted the lyrics to some of those songs in the early moons of this thread. It is the first for me to work with mp3's. I'm in the process now of trying to put together a web sight for our group.

I'd like to hear your arrangement. And I know what you mean about the steel sharpening steel kind of thing. I need it. I learned that the hard way, that no man can make it as an island.

Again, it's really good to hear from you.

HI George and Fed and all my electronic Christian brothers,

It is hard for me to believe that our society had come to a point that if you believe there are some things such as absolute right and wrong that you are labeled as a self righteous bigot with delusions of granduer. It is a small price to pay compared to the benefits of grace freely given (lest any man should boast) and far less than what Christ endured to secure my freedom.

Fed, I am curious bout your "limited english" as you put it. I see you live in upstate New York according to your profile but what is you family or ethnic background if you don't mind me asking out of curiosity.

George, I was curious if you got settled into your new set up. As I recall a few months back you were setting up a new desk or rack in your room.

I am still stuck without a room to leave my stuff set up and it will probably be another three years before we can afford to move. By then my two year old will be easier to contain from runing and clibing amok with destructively reckless abandon.

I have some buds in town from my church I would like to do some projects with but time and location are always a problem with little ones around.

This may be my shortest post on this thread for a long time.

So I will leave it at that.

the thread is back .. woo hoo :)

ScooterB,
I grew up in russia and lived in US now for about 6.5 yers, just got my citizenship few month ago. I suppose my english is not too "limited", but I ran into situations before where I didn't pick meening correctly.

Hey I have a two year old too... but my computer and recording set up in the basement so no interference there... yet...

I got (actualy my wifes) so much music I want record... but with family and work there is just so little time. oh well all in Gods time.. I guess...

cheers

Scooter B;

I did get moved into my room. I bought another computer for my recording and was going to leave my old computer in the bedroom for internet and office use. But my wife decided to take the moment to her advantage by getting my junk ( as she refers to it) out from around her junk (as I refer to it), and put it in my music room. I still have plenty of room to work with my music.... for now.

I know what you mean about the children. Although all my daughters are grown and married, my three grandkids visit quite often. The oldest is two. I have a feeling he's going to be a musician,........ or a stunt driver. I usually wait until everybody is in bed asleep before I even attempt to record.

Fed;

Congratulations on getting your citizenship. Don't worry about your english, I was born and raised in this country and still haven't grasped the proper use of the english language. :)

George

Hi Fed,

George is right, you are doing fine communicating in english and much better than we could do in russian. I know nyet and dasvidania but I may not have spelled them right.

The basement option is nice but we don't have them in Oklahoma very much. The water table is higher here and it is very difficult and expensive to make them "water tight" even though we live in the tornado capital of the world.

Someday I will have a room to myself.

Ditto on the cogratulations on your citizenship Fed.

George I tried to domnload an MP3 of your in the MP3 forum but my computer was not doing something right. I will try again later.

Since you do all your recording after everyone else is sleeping I assume you do most everything DI or have some really good sound proofing. What are you using for your drum machine? I have been using a Boss DR 5.

dasvidania

Hey guys ...
Thanks ... it's a blessing to be a citizen of this fine country... (the best in world as far as I'm concern :) "God bless America" (actualy He did already ... aaah "America... bless God" aaah that's better :D)

Anyway George, all my recording is after 9pm usualy too, and Scooter I have that Dr5 also and only use it for a click at this point :) I just was never satisfied with the way it sounded or the programming of it. I use Acid 2.0 now. got it free from GC. I just use single shots or cut loops up and make my own paterns...

here is an example... if you want to here it ...

or for better quality at 256kbs

I just don't have a heart to let this thread die... :) it's nice talking to you guys...

I just know we are gonna start talking about the weather... :D

George ...
"does anybody see you" is realy growing on me... I like it...
first line in the chorus was in my head for a week now....

great song... good message too..
cheers

Fed, I'm glad you liked the song. It came out of a soul searching point in my life. A self evaluation.

Scooter B and Fed; If I'm just starting to put a song together, I use the drum patches in my Yamaha EX5 keyboard. It dosen't have any factory preset drum patterns, but it dosen't take much to generate one. And if I'm ready to get serious with that particular song, I get the drummer in our group to lay the drum track down on his Roland electronic drum set.

Fed, I listened to your song. Great stuff! What ever you're doing in Acid 2.0, keep doing it. You seem to have a handle on it. I bought Sonar XL a few months ago, which came with lots of drum samples, but I haven't waded into them yet. I like recording in Sonar, but for some reason I perfer mastering in Cool Edit Pro.

Fed, I see you live in NY. I received a phone call today from our lead singer. He told me the single we released on our latest CD, called "Heart of a Child", was #95 on the Christian Country Music charts. He had just received the national air play tracking stats for the first month and the song seems to be doing rather well in NY. It always amazes me to see the doors that God can open. If you happen to hear a song by a group called Answered Prayer, that's us. Just a bunch of Southern rednecks that love God.

Hi everybody! Good to see the thread alive and kickin'...

Well... Where do I start? Oh, yes: I have a little daughter too, she's 1 and a half year and I LOVE HER! She's so beautiful and intelligent and I guess she'll be a musician... or a veterinarian. Well, whatever, I have a cut schedule at wor (from 7-2 and from 4-6 hrs.) and when I record is during my 2 hrs. lunch break meanwhile my wife is working and my mothr in law takes care of Alexa.

Fed: I can relate to you in the english thing. I am from México and it can be a problem sometimes. But not with guys as nice as you!

Guys: if you want your drums to sound more real, use FruityLoops with the soundfont player, there are tons of great soundfonts in the net free to download.

George: Congrats on your group's song. I know God has a perfect plan for you and for everyone of us.

Saludos y bendiciones
Alex

RE: The DR-5 for drum machine.

Yeah its not up to par with a really good drum machine. Originally I was blaming the results on no preamps as I was thinking I could do everything DI'd with SansAmps on the bass and guitar (the little stompbox versions) and used the Bass Driver to try to warm up the DR-5. I did find some improvement with mixing a miked signal of the DR-5 going into my SWR bass amp and out my 2-10" cabinet with an SM-57 in the bathroom. It seemed to add a more "live ambient sound" and was mixed subtlely with the direct signal it was the best sound I had gotten so far out of it onto a four track cassette.

I have since aquired a Joe Meek VCQ 6, M Audio DMP-3, 2 Octavia 012A's and an MXL V-67M. So I hope to continue to push the limits of the DR-5 and my other sub par equipment namely the 4-track cassette. Eventually I want a dedicated DAW (Yamaha 2816) but I find PC computers exacerberatingly problematic. Plus the one computer we have is at the opposite end of the house of our bedroom where my equipment now rests. If I get something worth while I can mix it to mini disc and download it to the PC but I just have the original lame audio card and the tiny original speakers to monitor the process with.

If I forgot to mention it although my little girl limits my time to record she is the "apple of my eye" and I wouldn't trade her for all the money in the world.

Now I have some understanding of how God loves us as the apple of His eye! Maybe she will be able to sing and we can do some projects together down the road if the Lord tarries.

Yeah!

I think my daughter will eventually develop great musical abilitie, she's 1 year 4 mo's and she dances and keeps the rhythm with her hand.

Listen, guys, I have a thread going in the MP3 clinic, it would be great if someone could give it a hear, ok?

It's called "El flapo strikes again"

Blessings
Alejandro

DR-5 etc

Yeah, I use a DR-5 for drum loops and bass parts. I found that just a little room ambience from my old Alesis does wonders for the sound. The key, as usual is "just a little". It seems to place them in the same acoustic space , so to speak. Also, I found that messing with the drum sounds, level-wise and Pan-wise helps too. I make several loops and assemble them into the song form, record this as pure MIDI on a sequencer and go from there. If I need to add anything, I play it on an old ( all my stuff is old) Yamaha pad setup, MIDI'd to the dr-5 for fills etc. Maybe more complex than it needs to be, but it works for me.
Choral arrangements are not my bag, but I'm learning. We are very blessed to have an ace director, who is a professor of voice at UofI here in town. He is also a world-class jazz pianist, and he
has coached me some with the harmony. I have most of a degree in music from a previous life, so I am semi-hip to the theory although my reading is way poor, but improving. I use Finale Note
Pad for writing it all down, available free from www.codamusic.com. It's excellent for my limited needs and the price is right. My gift is definately NOT choral writing, but it seems that God has laid this on me because He wants it sung, and I praise His name.

DR 5 etc

Chazba,

"Just a little bit" was definiety key to adding a "ambiant mic source" for the DR-5. Actually I do track it in stereo and wanted to keep the attack of thre drums in a stereo spread.

From what I have read on the digital sample and reverbs the older machines with 16 bit and smaller cut out some of the decay of a signal and contributed greatly to mechanical sound of it. I am theorizing that by micing the sample going through an amp and speakers with a little natural reverb from the bathroom it makes up for some of the lost decay in smaller bit samples etc. I may be completely wrong about that though....just my theory but a HUGE improvement without even using a preamp at the time!

Chazba I use to live in Grand Rapids MI (referencing you wishigan I was in Michigan). Michigan is the most beautifull state I have lived in...camping in the upper peninsula, fall colors "Hail to the Victors" fight song sledding all day in the winter...good times.

Every time I see you name chazba I have the old Clash song in my head of Rock the Kasba...I don't know why but I had to throw that in there.:D

P.S. Since I bounce my four track cassette down to Mini Disc and back and Mix to Mini Disc for the final... I was curious what the bit storage was on MD. Is it the same as CD (16 bit I think)?

My owners manuel does not say.

Wow!

This subject has been around for a LONG time. It's funny how things can change.

But its always for the good. <><

Okay it has been quiet on this thread for two weeks and I get an e-mail today saying Melody Lane has responded on this thread......but I can't find it!

Melody did you retract your post?

Anyway How is everyone?

God Bless.

I'm not Melody, but hello Scoots. I'm doing great. :)

Your servant in Christ,
