does anybody know peavey combo amps really well?

i was in the music store yesterday and i played a used peavey combo amp. it was a tube amp and it had 2 12" speakers. i think the model number had a "50" in it, so i guess it was 50W. it had to be about 10+ years old. 2 channels, with "bright" and "boost" switches for both. it also had a tremelo and a reverb, all switchable with a footswitch.
this is a tough thing to find on google or harmony central, and the store is closed now. i want to do some research on it because i was really impressed with how it sounded (i played a sunn 2x12 combo that was 3X the price right before it and i honestly liked the peavey better). if anybody knows what amp it could be i'd really appreciate it!
 
oh and all the knobs and inputs and power/standby switches were on the front, not on top
and the footswitch almost seemed like it was hard wired into the amp, i tried to unplug it to look at the connector but i couldn't get it off. maybe its threaded or something
 
Never tried the combo,but I had the Renown amp for about 20 years and rarly had a problem(except throwing my back out,damm thing is a tank!) :cool:
 
well its not a renown (at least from my google image search), but its very similar. each channel had its own eq, and the tremolo had 2 knobs for speed/intensity and reverb was a single knob, and then a master knob on the furthest right. it had 2 inputs, high gain and low gain.
 
I have friends who have Peaveys and they have been reliable, you like the sound, thats what an amp is about.
 
its a peavey duel 212, harmony central reviews say that its 120 watts? thats insane, i guess the 50 is because its some sort of offshoot from the classic 50. i'm gonna try to trade in my current marshall vs100 and mg4x12 because i know i'll never touch them again after getting this.

My all time fav peavey was a classic 50 4x10 & it went to 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we have a backstage plus 15watt lil' screamer & a special 112 bandit & I used to use a TNT150 bass combo (I still miss it)

I've not heard good things about the dual or the transfex (I've never tried either cos' I'm firmly in the jaws of line 6
 
The new peavey tube combos are sweet... better value than fender, a little darker than comparable fenders. Pretty bulletproof too.
 
In the early 80's a had a Peavey Deuce. I think that had 120 watts. If I remember correctly, the preamp was solid-state and the final power amp had 6L6 tubes.
The amp took a beating and never failed. It was just O.K. I sold it to buy a 65 Twin Reverb and never looked back.
 
well i went down and got it today. weighs a ton. its got fender tubes in it which i imagine i'm gonna replace pretty soon and get it cleaned up. its got a buzz to it, not sure if thats just a characteristic of the amp or if its my room (i've never had an amp that didn't buzz..)
 
but it sounds pretty fantastic so far! this is my first tube amp so i guess i'm just excited all around.
 
The only good thing about peavey amps...........they are bulletproof, however you will sacrifice a good many things for being bulletproof.......the most important is tone.....peaveys sound like a shoebox, they make lots of noise, not worth a shit in the studio( because of the noise ) they are very heavy, in short...if you want a piss poor sounding amp that makes a ton of noise and weighs a ton....then buy a peavy!!!!!
 
well it will at least train my ears to know what sucks. i palyed it back to back with a sunn and i know people go ape shit over them, and i was honestly more impressed with the peavey. but only one channel on the sunn worked so i didn't get to hear its distortion.
 
If I was looking for an in-expensive tube amp, I would look at crate amps.....lots of bang for the buck and will blow a peavey out of the water. I have an old gtx120-4-12 that I like more than my marshall . Its all in the tone! My other lead player has an old peavey that he refuses to part company with and it sounds like hell. The only peavey I like is the nashville 400's for playing steel guitar or an old tnt150 that I use for keys.

Dude, I had a Deuce in the 80's too. It survived a car wreck and being dropped multiple times. Then my band booked some studio time and when I plugged my amp in it started smoking! :eek: Up until that time I never had any trouble with it. I still have the cabinet with the Black Widows in my closet.
 
A friend of mine had the MACE. the one that was 160 watts. Molly Hatchet rawks!
