I bought a "new" pinch roller for my MS16 on a "well known online audio shop" (not ebay), although i have one that is fully rerubbered by terry and completely flat, when i received the "new" one i noticed that it is convex or barrel shaped a little when put on a flat surface. When i called the seller he says that it is how it came from Tascam and that 1" pinch rollers are supposed to be like this, fatter in the middle so it will wear and break in.

Having sent other pinch rollers to terry from my other machines, and getting all of them flat. I am wondering if what this seller is telling me is true or not. He says i can return it if i dont like it and that this is only because is wide format.

Based on your experience, do pinch rollers at this tape width should be totally flat or fatter in the middle ? i thought that the contact between pinch roller and capstan was supposed to be uniform across the tape width, not only in the center.

thoughts ?

Mmmmm...I've seen them both ways, flat or with a very small hump...but I can't tell you what the stock roller on the MS16 should be like.
If there is a very small hump that's suppsed to be there...it should flatten out against the capstan when the pinch roller is engaged. If you see "daylight" at outer ends...the maybe the roller is deformed.

At least that's my common sense view.

I'm sure some of the other guys will pop in and give opinons....

I don't have a ton of recorders, but I'd say flat all the way. You can true the rubber up using a lathe and a toolpost grinder.

I have seen both types on the MS-16 and the ATR 60-16.I think the barrel type was used for better tape path/tape handling.Do a "fine tape path adjustment".(in the manual), and you will see why.Use whichever was originally on the transport-otherwise it may be "fine tape path adjustment" time...

i tried that fine adjustment part of the manual with successful results. The only part that i havent touched is the azimuth adjustment of the tension rollers. Any tips for that ?

here's a close in video of the pinch roller:
