do your ears ring 24-7?

i put this here cause our ears are microphones.

if your ears ring 24-7 your screwed,at least that is what my e.n.t. doctor told me(and thus far i have found this to be true). my ears ring non stop,they have for a long-long time. there is no cure for this(although there is a pill for temporary relif). it is called tinitus. dont you hate it when you are putting up mics on the drum kit and someone decides that this is the best time to play them? dont ever let anyone do that. and sticking your ear by a blasting 4x12 is a very bad idea. even if you have in ear plugs(i wear them when drummers and gtr players are setting up)and i mean the real form fitted ear plugs made for musicians,you can still cause tramua to the tiny bones in your ear thus resulting in premanent hearing damage that is unrepairable. i would suggest to everyone reading this that you get real ear plugs made($150)by an ear doctor or audiologist for your protection! dont wait until it is too late!! monitoring mixes at high levels is a real killer too! doing this day in and day out even at low levels can cause levels of damage. take a hearing test and see how much of the high q's a lot of you probly cant hear(although you might think your hearing is fine) it only gets worse if you dont do anything to protect yourself. i am speaking from pure experience on this.

now,how many people have this ringing?
 
I just went and check out a friends band.

They were rehersing in a small bedroom.
Drums, bass, guitar.
I stood outside the room and they played loud enuf for my ears to ring for a few hours after.

None of them wore ear plugs.

I told them that they are going to develop hearing damage.
I said you know that snare alone in that room will give you tinitus.

The drummer kind of laughed a little and was like "yeah, I've already got it a little"
Like it was COOL:( :mad: WTF!!!! I could not comprehend that attitude.
It actually pissed me off quite a bit.

I told my friend, the bassist, that I would not stop bagdering him about wearing earplugs until he finnally got some.
I gave him the whole schtick about it.
I really dont believe he thinks its a serious issue.

This just baffels me.

Being hearing impaired, partially or completely is absolutely the farthest thing from cool I can possibly imagine.....except maybe burning to death.
I would much rather be blind than deaf.

Unfortunately I think ringing ears are common to a lot of musicians and engineers.

I'm 26 and I have had personalised plugs for about 4 years now. I don't use them enough (playing is weird while wearing them, though they kinda make my instrument -bass- clearer soehow) but I know I need them.

Ears are for life.

And if you can't afford these, just get the soft sponge ones that conform to your ear canal. They're cheap - a buck or so - and do a pretty good job of cutting the dB to your ear drums.

The problem is that the hair cells in your inner ear (cochlea) that detect the sound pressure difference in the fluid around them (endolymph) become damaged, and not only become less sensitive (hearing loss) but start firing spontaneously, making your brain think you are hearing noises (tinnitis).

Protect your ears - it's the only set you'll ever get.
 
I've heard once that the ringing is actually sometimeng in your brain: your ear is damaged and thus doesn't hear some frequencies. Your brain wants to help you out and starts 'making' these frequencies.. they're not physically there, it's the mind...

The story continues that Sting has had a really bad tinnitus for years, but he got rid of it by psychological help (hypnosis)

That said, I'd rather take precaution than having to be healed (or how do they say that in English ?)

I play in a bagpipe band, and I've had these cool orange plugs with three sort of fins on them. They're good, but not good enough. I really need to get good ones from a doctor. What really kills in a pipe band is that I'm pipe sergeant and responsible for most of the tuning. So in order to hear pitches reliably, I take out my plugs to tune the band. It really sucks! Just one set of pipes produces like 98 db, sometimes up to 110.
 
10 years+ and counting... so bad at one point I thought it would make me insane... then you just get used to it. Never ever stops. SOmetimes worse than other times.

If you moron fucks that play in live bands dont start using them after being warned now, then you ARE just that. Ears are, as someone said, for life. Not just the first 2/3 of it.

Take care of that shit.

Next band I'm in I'm going to say I'm the sergeant and bark orders all day. Cool.
 
i have those mutone (i think that's what they're called)earplugs....my friends all looked at me like i was crazy when i said i was considering 120 dollar ear plugs....mine ended up being about 150 or so cause i got extra filters.

some people don't like to wear ear plugs because everything sounds like crap through them.....through these earplugs, it doesn't. i know that i personally can't wear normal ear plugs when jamming....i get all weird and can't keep time.

but those earplugs are completely different. if you got to a lot of shows or practice a lot with a band, you owe it to yourself to get them. YOU CAN AFFORD IT. put off buying one of your new mics for a while, or stop going to shows everyweekend and you'll be able to afford them in no time.
 
i dont see how people say they are too expensive. so hearing is only worth $150? i see a lot of people have stories or experience with this issue. anyone playing any type of music at all must have these!! things do sound a little strange at first but if you never play without them you will quickly get used to them and if you ever take them out while someone is playing at full volume you will not believe how fucking loud it is and you will not believe that you used to not wear them throughout those 2 and 3 hour sunday rehersals. the form fitted musicians earplugs are much better than those marshmellow ones that you squeeze before inserting into your ear. they cast a mold of your ear for a perfectly tight fit and they are comfortable as hell. i never even know i have them in. if you practice in a bedroom and you play loud rock and metal and you dont protect youself sooner or later you will be fucked. its just a matter of time. i have heard stories that the ringing has driven people insane. i have to sleep at night with a fan running to mask the ringing. it sucks. protect your dam ears. imagine how awesome all of your mixes will sound when you are deaf! when you become deaf you can mail me all of your gear. ill cover all shipping costs.
 
If you do a lot of live shows - you better wear protection or you will end up with hearing loss.

My ears have been ringing since I saw Soundgarden way back when. I don't know that that wall of speakers was needed, but it sure gave me something to aspire to. :)

Word of advise......don't next to a towering wall of speakers.
 
I use the E.A.R. type that are heavy foam on a stud. SKU number is 80529-21015 and they are rated at a -25dB cut.

My friend gives me a case of 'em every year for my birthday, so I pass them out liberally at venues. The post mounted foamies are very effective and sturdy. They are washable and can be reused many times... much nicier and more tidy than the cheapie foam rolls. Much more effective.

I gig 2x weekly and they are in my ears from power up to power off. I don't know how anybody can stand the noise without them. I'm age 53 and still have all my hearing, plus a confirmed test to prove it. Ear protection works.
 
If ear plugs bother you too much, and your drummer isnt raging moron that flat out refuses to use them, try the HotRod drumsticks out. They are like a bunch of dowels tied together, and significantly lower the volume of the drums. Turn everything down, and then bring the guitars and bass up to where you have a good mix with the new lower volume drums, and check out the difference it makes. Used a pair the other day and they are great.
Now, drummers wont like them cause they "feel weird" and the snare doesnt explode like it normally does, but DAMN suddenly you can hear everything more clearly, the singer doesnt kill himself trying to be heard, and you can practice later. Tell the drummer to get the hell over it. I mean, whats more important, a weird feeling stick that'll take 30 minutes to get used to, or your hearing.
I know my answer.
 
Golly... my ears have been ringing since about 1975... do you really think it might fuck with my career? uh-oh... guess I better consider a different line of work? ...damn.

see, fletcher is an example of how tinitus can make you insane!
 
Nah! Just answer the phone. It'll stop. But then you'll have to worry about hearing voices, and that's a whole different situation.
