Most people I know that have any animosity toward rap does so due to the fact that those listening to rap try to shove it down our throats at every stop light, stop sign, public park or wherever. It's fine that someone wants to listen to rap at high volume levels inside their own homes, but it's wrong to do so in public. You may be fine with having your children sit around and listen to all the F-bombs and killing and raping and shooting cops and whatever else but most people do not want their kids subjected to that language. Unfortunately there's no way to avoid it because when you're sitting at a stop light someone invariably pulls alongside or behind you and has their 1000 watt stereo pumping at full blast and that is EXTREMELY annoying. And the words are VERY offensive. As I said, in private have at it but when you're in public please be aware that others don't appreciate it being forced upon them.

I didn't pay 1500.00 for my car system just so i could turn it down when i get to a stoplight. I bet you wouldn't care if i was blasting some nickelback though huh?

I never come in here, but had to say kudos to this thread. It sucks that people just gotta be that way. I think a lot of things suck, but I dont go attacking people about it. Especially in something as feeble as a forum.

That having been said....

KOOL KEITH!

WOW... So who is this really? Did you register that name five months ago just to post this? Your shit is lame and you are a coward. You can't even stand behind your opinions with your FAKE name. You had to make another to do it.

This is what I was talking about...

Oh... and I got anonymous neg rep exactly two minutes after he made that post. Wonder who it could have been?

So I hit you back man...

I've noticed that alot of times that people in cars who listen to loud music want you to hear it too (windows down)--and it's usually very offensive stuff. It's almost like they are saying,"Hey,look what I have the freedom to listen to! Did you catch that guy saying F___k? Over and over? Well,I'm as bad as this guy! See my tats? My bumperstickers? I'm totally gangsta approved!"

I agree that some try to offend on purpose.
This is not an anti-rap post.....alot of music has the same elements. Why push people away with vulgarity? Be sensitive to those around you.

DZ, you could have saved a lot of money and gotten the same effect by getting an ipod and sticking a vibrator up your butt. :)

Seriously though, I wouldn't know a nickelback song if I heard one. I come from the era of the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix, Yes, Deep Purple, etc. The high volume wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for a lot of the lyrics. I guess if you don't have kids yet it is harder to understand where I'm coming from.

mrT, I came across this bulletin board about the time I registered. I'm just now beginning to look into the home recording bit and really haven't gotten off the ground yet. Not sure why you would say I'm a coward and why my opinion or insights would be lame. You might not agree with my assessment but I really didn't mean for it to be in a negative light.

mrT, I didn't negative rep you or anyone else. I figure it's the moderator's job to determine what's appropriate and what's not. Nothing you've said has offended me personally.

Hey I like that song "The Humpty Dance", and that other one...ah I forget the name of it. :p

Just kidding....

I've got nothing against rap personally. Whatever musical outlet you enjoy, I say more power to you. I've also seen some guys on a turntable who really impressed me! There is talent in hip hop on many levels.

The thing that puts alot of outsiders off to rap is the apparent culture of it (at least in the commercial sense) more so than the musical content. Plenty of the youngsters that get into rap adopt the ego and the arrogance long before they develop any talent.
It does take talent to do good hip hop music, it's just like anything else.
Those guys are the reason that problems arise and bad attitudes get put in place. If you see a musician from any other walk strut around with that kind of arrogance and nothing to back it up, you will see that person be similarly disrespected....and you will most likely not see other musicians rally to defend him.

Anybody who creates music with feeling and with power, you've got my respect. There are plenty in the hip hop world who do that. There are probably several on this board, but I've not taken the time to find out.

I like what C Joker had to say.

I have a feeling that somebody will probably curse me for speaking my opinion. That will only reinforce it. Anybody that puts their heart into their music will understand that it's not an insult to them.

I enjoy hip-hop quite a bit but I do appreciate musicians who play instruments more than producers that arrange samples and loops to assemble songs. Too $hort said it best when he rapped about breaking out the instruments and staying away from samples. He also was furious over people ripping off James Brown.

I don't hate rap, I just hate the niggas in it - Phonte of Lil Brother

I mean 90% of it sucks. Is sub-par or otherwise not all that good. Some of it kicks ass too. I think that's about the percentage of bands that suck in general too. Not saying that about anyone specifically just that in life I think the great majority of people aren't good at it. But that's what makes those who are so special.

90% of the stuff I come up with sure sucks. The other 10% is about 90% godawful. The rest of it is so good I spend another year chasing that sound so I can hear it again. It's like having one instant bathed in the light - and then you wake up again. Only now you know what the light is like and you can't forget it even when you try.

I'm just hanging around a bit more here learning stuff. There's a huge difference between what I'm hearing here and some of the depressing hate&anger&self-loathing bouncing out of the tricked up '92 Hondas that prance around at the downtown lights.

Like there's Real, and there's Everything Else.

Peace.

To disrespect sampling is to disrespect hip hop at its roots. It saddens me that Too Short made such a statement.

ok so you old school erwin and you don't want your kids to know wut it's like on the streets but you'd feel good about yourself knowing that they are listening to lucy in the sky with diamonds= LSD....but it's the beatles so it must be good right?

joing this convo late, but be asured that i read all of it, and i feel comfotable misspelling words hear just as much as anywhere eles....

with that ....hears this....

arguing over the semantics of music is like trying to convince a christian that islam is the way or vice versa.....

the people that don't get what your doin, be it rock or rap, are gonna say shit thats gonna bother us as musicians......they're aint no way around that....

so .........who gives a fuck!!!!!!

i'm a firm believer that music is the sound track to our lives whether you like music or not....it's here.... and your gonna remember a song from some part of your life whether you like it or not...just natural.

music doesn't change the world.....we change the music

It's called forcing your shit on another. When you do that, you blatantly disrespect the other person. But my guess is, you're the first to complain about disrespect whenever you get slighted.
