Do you believe that there are rules to good melody writing?

LOL...Now that we have discussed the "rules" for lyrics, Cyan was referring to melodies , and since I cannot erase the post, I remain ever the blundering idiot! My apolgies Cyan...maybe we can start a new thread on "lyrics.":D

I have to say, this is one of the best thread I've seen yet, and I've been waiting to read it for so long cause of all the interest I've had in what Dad and Sis are doing etc.......s.c..... so on...

All that to say, my initial reaction to the ? and every other time I read the title was No Rules. Then I started reading and thought
Oh my! I gotta what? Then I thought about some of the "rules", and how they seemed to make sense. Still, I've never known any of them in the years I've written music.(badly I'm sure)
My Rules:-----1. I gotta like it.
2. I gotta remember it.
3. I gotta be able to play it.
4. The people gotta like it.
More obnoxious(sp?) thoughts to come I'm sure as I read on......

Someone should fill Peter Framton in on rule number 3. I read once where he stated he couldn't really play half of what he wrote.
 
yeah, I've always wanted to make rule #3 that someone else has to be able to play it, but until now I've never been that serious about making my music and it's always been just me on a guitar.
