Do Pre-amps lose juice?

It doesn't make my microphone "sing" anymore, I have to turn it way up to even hear myself. I know it's not the microphone, because I've since replaced it, and I got the ear-phones tested. Tried a different cord. Nothing. Has this ever happened to any of you? I have a Lexicon Omega pre-amp, I e-mailed into tech-support today.
 
Components in the circuit might degrade over time and cause a reduction in gain but with modern gear like you Lex we’re talking decades (less for older amps using vacuum tubes and paper/oil caps etc).

It sounds very much as if your unit has simply developed a fault (assuming the problem doesn’t lie elsewhere in your signal chain).

Is it a condensor mic? If so, your +48V phantom power may be on the outs or if not, your XLR connector could be dirty. Check the connections of better yet, clean with De-Oxit and try again. Older XLR connections get quite dirty and oxidized over time. Looks like a black coating.
 
my vote is for the phantom power to have given out, as was previously stated. I doubt the unit is old enough to have the xlr's be gunked up.
