Do it yourself absorption panels

Okay let's say I want to make some absorption panels. What sort of material do I use? Foam? Fiberglass?

Ethan, I'm sure you know, but that is a great site! For acoustic beginners like myself, it makes my head swim. Then I wait a few days, and re-read it. Rinse and repeat. Eventually it starts to make sense. LOL!

I know there was a diagram around there somewhere on how to make your mini-traps. Does anyone have a link to that? The 2'x4' type. Anyone know where to buy 703 or 705 or equivalents in the Minneapolis area?

Lastly, in order to perform that Sonar test I saw in your video, which was excellent btw, I'd need an omni-directional mic, correct? Anyone know of a good CHEAP one. I'd primarily be using it for recording room treatment differences with various tone CD's etc. coming up in the next couple of months. I don't have an Omni-mic at all, so a CHEAP mic that would produce decent results in those tests would be great. I think it was said that most mics are flat below 300hz or something anyway, so would any omni work then, basically?

Foam
Pros-Fast, easy looks good with out much work,
Cons-coefficients must be read to understand the difference in
relationship to fiberglass. cheap stuff may burn
FAST How much money have you got vs time vs
understanding the difference or even caring.


Rigid fiberglass
Pros-Cheaper, Better overall coefficients vs foam depending on how used. Cons-
Harder to source-harder to deal with in relationship to installation and
design. How much time have you got vs money or understanding the
difference or even caring.

I care ánd I understand, you somehow seem to have a negative attitude towards me. Any reason? I'm just asking questions because I live on a different part of this globe, where everything is called different and not a lot of people are into recording to help me out.
Now another question: On multiple posts people are asking where to get 'rigid' fiberglass. Point is, I don't live in america and in my petite country there probably aren't many company's selling the stuff and I haven't found one yet. So, could I use 'normal'? fiberglass of about 4,5 inches thick or rockwool of about 4 inches thick?
And over here stores also carry sound isolation panels of about some more than 1 inch thick, usuable for any purpose. Is there any use for those?

And if my question is truely simple answerd somewhere else, you could have said so. The forum's search mode doesn't always work on my computer.

First of all the stuff you are looking for is not really 'rigid' it is more like 'semi-rigid'. It is not the 'fluffy' kind of batts that you see in home improvement stores.

It does not have to be Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Roxul, and others also make the same type of product.

It does not have to be Fiberglass. Rock Wool has almost identical properties.

The most important thing to look for is the density number. You are looking for something about 3 to 6 pounds per cubic foot (48 to 96 kilograms per cubic meter).

Where did you get that idea? What part of my reply gave any sort of negativity?
In fact, I don't get it at all. I've tried to help you with two replys, and in both you cop an attitude. In the first place, I DID NOT say you didn't care. If you will read my reply, it distinctly tells you what you wanted to know. Plain and simple. The "care" part was not telling you that you don't. I was relating it to some peoples indifference to fact, and still choose Foam over fiberglass as they have more money than time or ability to deal with covering and mounting fiberlass panels OR vice versa.
geeeezus I'm tired ot this, Some people would push away the hand that would save them from drowning because it grabbed them by the hair.

Rigid stuff.....

Hi Lizzie,
What I did was take some 2" thick, 4' x 8' sheets of pink rigid insulation and cut down some panels to suspend at angles over my workstation. A friend called it an "acoustic cloud". Since it was pink, I spray painted it gray, and hotglued some fabric over it. Here's a link to some pics. http://www.songramp.com/homepage.ez?Who=keldog

It ain't perfect but I'm getting some good mixes, so......
