I LOST THE GAME
I'd like to know if i can go straight from a guitar, to a mixer, to a audio interface. All i see on this website is mic to amp and output of the amp. THANKS!!!

That's all you see where on this site? There's plenty of threads talking about DI guitar and amp simulators.

You don't need the mixer, there's nary a few interfaces out there now that can't take a cable direct from the guitar. Be warned though, if you DON'T have any amp simulation software, it will sound like crap.

Thanks. Do have an example of a popular amp simulater?

You can do whatever you like, there are no rules, only guidelines... however people recommend miking an amp because that's generally regarded as the way to get the best electric guitar sounds.

It's not the only way, however - software and hardware modellers have come great strides in recent years... depends upon context - what sound you are trying to achieve.

I'm sure you'll find a bunch of people here who can tell you how to do this to get good results.

You don't NEED to do anything - feel free to break the paradigm.

Let us know how it goes. :D

Nope. The high end amp sims are gonna sound better than anything you'd record at home with modest home recorder gear in bad rooms.

Should i spend the money for an amp or for a simuilator? Thanks for your help guys!

Do whatever you want. If you want a huge variety of amp sounds, get the sim. If you mostly use one basic sound, mic your amp.

True what ever works best for you is what you should go with. MIC :D

You can't beat a great player playing a great guitar into a great amp in a great room into a great mic into a great pre-amp. Nothing beats the real thing. But unless you have all that, a sim is probably gonna sound better for home recording.

The police frequently do in some countries ! :laughings:

What would you have done if everyone had said "Yeah" ?

This isn't even a choice.

Mic.

Sims sound "off", aren't as flexible, and you can't use a sim to record the crazy sound the washing machine is making that would be perfect in "song x".

Don't get me wrong. Sims are fantastic for filler tones. Sims are even more useful if you run their output to a real amp and mic that. But guitar sounds are best mic'd. And I'll do anything with a guitar including plugging straight from the guitar into an analog console and clipping it as hard as I can. But 99.9% of the time, I'm micing an amp. Even for unconventional sounds.

No.

You also don't need to cook pasta before you eat it. Some people prefer the texture of cooked pasta, so YMMV.

These days you don't need to mic an amp. You don't even need amps...or a drum kit, or a bass guitar, or horn players, or string players or even backup singers...heck, you don't even need to sing in tune anymore....

...though that's how it all use to be done. ;)

Choose your own path. :)

I have to agree with Greg on this. Amp simulators (and modeling hardware/software in general) are getting better all the time - and they couldn't sound any worse than miking a cheap Crate.

You're obviously not going to want to plug the guitar directly into a mixer or A/D interface. You need something there to impart the characteristics of an amp and speaker cab setup to the signal from your pickups.
