Do I need something better than Line6 Guitar Port?

I've been using Sonar 4 with a Variax and GuitarPort interface. I'm using a Sony Vaio with an Audigy soundcard. Been recording this way since late 2004. I recently installed Cakewalk Virtual Instruments which work great except when I try to record audio, then the program locks up and drops out.

I've often wondered if there was a better interface than Guitarport available at a reasonable cost that would get my variax signal into the software. My son uses the Line6 Gearbox device, and I haven't tried that yet.

Any gear suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know what a Variax is but I use a Line 6 POD X3. Works great and sounds pretty damn good.
...Variax's being those crazy guitars with no visible pickups that can make any sound. Pretty cool idea I reckon but never tried one.

Have you tried recording just a normal audio signal? Like a mic? Reason I ask is perhaps it's not your guitarport, but something else?

Are you using the guitarport or the audigy as your soundcard? Obviously a Line6 device with Variax port would give you more options. The guitar port is USB, no? As for Sonar dropping out, I'll assume your Vaio is grunting pretty hard while trying to play those Virtual instruments. Try archiving/muting those tracks while recording, or render them to waves. If I had a Variax, I'd be looking pretty hard at the X3 system with Gearbox. The Toneport models don't have Variax inputs.

Thanks Mike.

I ended up replacing the GuitarPort with a Line6 Toneport UX2 that my son was using. It works fine, with just the instrument jack. No skipping or anything. I did end up bypassing the soundcard and just use the ASIO drivers for the Toneport to run all the sounds on the computer.

For those that might be doing a search:

I found that GuitarPort works better with the latest version of Gearbox software.

Yep, and if its a registered Guitarport, the Gearbox upgrade is free. :)
